Dear New Writer, This is Why You Need To Establish Your ‘Whys’
It’s the only thing that’ll keep you going!
Dear New Writer,
Why do you write?
Why are you writing on Medium?
What’s the point of it all?
Have you ever asked yourself —
Why you do what you do.
What your goals are with respect to writing.
What you hope to achieve with your writing.
As a writer, it’s important to figure out — why you do what you do, and ground yourself in your reasons.
This is because, along the journey towards achieving your goals, you’ll be tested.
For example, If you’re writing on Medium because you want to build a passive income stream of $2000 a month, you might initially have months where you’ll earn less than $20.
It’s a part of the journey. It doesn't mean you should give up.
The fact that you haven’t reached your goals yet, should only propel you towards working smarter and strategically towards reaching your goals.
It is important to identify your whys, and stay grounded in them.
My recommendations
Find your other “whys” outside earning money from the Medium Partner Program.
Money is an important aspect for many of us writers on here. And I’ll never ask you to cast that aside. I’m sure many of us could do with more money flowing into our bank accounts. It’s a given.
However, it’s important to establish other whys, which will keep you going and grounded even when you’re not earning as much as you’d like to.
For example. you could make your other Whys-
- Building a writing portfolio online
- Belonging to a growing writing community online
- Sharing your gifts with the world
- Adding value to other people’s lives.
- Impact
Virality and making money shouldn’t be the be-all and end-all of your writing goals. You need to figure out more Why’s.
Writing is a powerful gift.
And establishing more reasons to do it religiously is the only thing that’ll keep you going when you’re discouraged, unmotivated, or feel like giving up.
