Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Aim To Go Viral With All Your Blog Posts
Do This Instead.
As a writer on Medium, you want your articles to do well.
You want to go viral because going viral equals money through the Medium Partner Program.
But the truth is — if going viral didn’t increase your chances of earning more money, I doubt many of us would be as concerned with writing articles that go viral.
Instead, we’d be more interested and focused on the value and impact our writing contributes to other people’s life.
It’s an interesting conundrum to navigate as a writer.
A couple of days ago, I wrote this article —
I wrote it from my heart.
It came from my own personal experiences and life lessons navigating my lack of self-worth and self-esteem issues.
But after writing and submitting it to the publication, I thought to myself —
“I doubt this article will do well”
“It doesn’t seem to have that viral element to it”
“No interesting headlines”
“No shock factor”
“It’s boring”
But then a still small voice said to me — “There’s a message in here for someone. Someone needs to hear this. Maybe, the message is for only one person. But that one person needs to hear this message.”
I obeyed and trusted that still small voice from within.
I always trust my internal voice. It has never steered me wrong.
This morning, I woke up to this comment on the article that touched my heart:

It felt so good to know that the message was delivered to the person/people who needed to hear it.
The feeling the comment gave me, felt as good as earning money on it!
It made me realize that as a writer, it’s easy to get sucked into writing for the numbers$$$$$$.
As writers, we have to keep in mind that — it’s so easy for us to lose our authentic voices.
Writing, the ability to channel blocks of thoughts into words, is a spiritual activity. It’s a spiritual gift.
As writers, we are channelers in our own right.
It is our sacred duty to deliver what comes through our hearts to the world.
We’re the messengers, healers, and prophets.
We’re workers of light and truth-tellers.
Our words have the power to cause internal and soul shifts for people.
By writing, we’re actively living out our purpose to share with the world.
It’s always important to keep in mind that writing isn’t only about making $$$$$$$, but also about the impact, our words have on others.
As a writer, can you relate to what I just shared?
Is it easy for you to get lost in the earning potential of your pieces, rather than the impact of your words?
Do you feel like writing is a part of your sacred duty here on earth?
I’d love to hear your thoughts and reflections on this.
