7 Uncomfortable Truths About Medium

Not Everyone Will Win Here

1. You won’t become a millionaire by writing on Medium.

Sorry to break it to you! But it’s true.

There’s a limit to how much money you can earn writing on Medium.

Most 6/7-figure earning writers on Medium like Abena Talks and Tim Denning DID NOT build their wealth by simply writing on Medium.

They built their wealth by building digital assets, setting up writing businesses, and investing.

If you rely solely on the Medium Partner Program to build wealth, you’re going about it all wrong and you won’t get far.

2. Not everyone will be interested in reading your work

Be honest with yourself, you don’t read every single article you come across on Medium. It’s impossible!

In the same light, you can expect that — Not everyone on Medium will also be interested in reading work.

Don’t let this stop you from writing and publishing every day.

What you have to share will not be for everyone. But if you keep going, eventually, you’ll find an audience for your work.

You just have to —

• Keep writing,
• Keep publishing
• Keep engaging with other writers on the platform.

In time, you’ll build readership around your work.

3. It doesn’t matter how consistent you are with writing on Medium if your headlines are trash.

Pay attention to what draws you to the stories you end up reading. They draw you in with captivating headlines.

You can have the best story, but if your headlines are weak, very few people will be interested in reading your work.

Go to some of the best writers on the platform and read through their headlines. Don’t copy them. But learn from them.

4. The more successful you become on Medium, the more hate you get!

In the infamous words of Notorious BIG, “Mo money. Mo problems”. It happens here on Medium as well.

The more successful you get in life, the more others become envious of you and start to talk shit about you.

Recently, I read an article by Abena Talks where she complained bitterly about the hate mail, and hateful racist comments she receives just because she makes $100,000 a month as an online writer.

But hey — it’s better to be rich with a few haters than be broke because you’re afraid to put yourself out there because of the haters.

Haters are a sign you’re doing well!

5. Medium should be paying its writers more money

If you’ve been around Medium long enough, then you know this is a general consensus many writers currently have.

Along the way, Medium made some drastic changes and slashed many writers' earnings and reads by more than half.

This led to a massive exodus from the platform, as many seasoned writers left to find better opportunities elsewhere.

This led to the popular saying on the platform “Medium is Dead”

Well, I don’t think Medium is completely dead because a few writers are still able to make thousands of dollars a month. Apparently, less than 10% of writers earn about $100+ a month.

I find these numbers to be quite appalling! Yes Medium, pay your writers more money!

6. Writing on Medium is not a get-rich-quick scheme

By now, I hope you understand clearly that writing on Medium is not a quick rich scheme.

I don’t recommend it to people who want to make money very quickly.

I recommend writing consistently on Medium to writers who want to —

• Build a writing portfolio
• Build a passive income stream
• Use Medium as a launching pad to secure more writing opportunities outside the platforms.

I’m not saying it’s impossible to earn thousands as a new writer.

There are a few exceptions like in the story below:

7. Many writers will quit along the way. It’s a fact!

Not all the new writers starting on Medium are going to be writing on this platform in the next couple of months.

Many will give up out of frustration and impatience.

It takes a strong will to be able to show up here to write daily, even when your stats and earnings are poor.
