8 Types Of Readers On Medium

You know them. You’ve met them. Which One Are You?

1. The Ghosts

These Medium readers silently read your work but don’t clap or comment.

They’re there. You just can’t see them or interact with them.

They passively and casually browse through Medium, reading stories that might interest them, but never truly engaging with the work on the platform.

To all my ghost readers — I appreciate your genuine read time because you still help put money in my pocket.

Especially paid subscribers to Medium.

2. The Pretenders

These Medium readers pretend to have read your work and leave completely irrelevant comments, that make you think “WTF does this even mean?”

You can always tell they never read by the kinds of comments they habitually leave on your work.

They think they’re getting away with it.

But we can all spot them.

We still kinda love them though, because they fill our comment section with just the right amount of fluff, to make us feel good about ourselves and our work.

3. The Regulars

The Regulars understand that — you thrive on Medium through reciprocity.

They show up to read your work because they appreciate you reading their work.

They appreciate and understand the power of mutual support.

Regulars are a great way to build a support system and community on Medium.

We all love our regular readers who give us good vibes.

4. The Fam

Regulars can always turn into “Fam”.

The Fam readers have been loyal to you and your work ever since they found you online.

They’re your tribe now. And you count on them to show up for you, to give you genuine read time, engagement, love, and support.

The fam is your core community within the larger Medium community.

I love my Medium Fam.

5. The Angels

These readers appear out of nowhere and leave you private notes on improvements you can make to your work.

They’re gentle and compassionate in their approach to bringing awareness to errors, typos, and mistakes you may have made in your work.

I love my angel readers.

6. The Skimmers

They’re here to skim, and not to thoroughly read through your work.

This crop of readers are easily bored, and can’t sit still long enough to read through articles.

Their attention span is shorter than that of a goldfish.

To them, skimming is the only way to read.

7. The Know- It-Alls

The know-it-alls exist to prove to you as a writer that they know more about a subject than you do.

They prowl the Medium streets looking to show off their knowledge by undermining and talking down on articles.

Example:

You could write an article about different types of cakes, and they’ll show up in your comment section criticizing you for not deep-diving into the art of baking.

Their sole aim is to affirm themselves as the intelligent ones, by undermining your work.

And, oh, they can’t stand being wrong!

8. The Haters

You can also call them Trolls.

These readers are generally angry and bitter in real life, too.

They come to agitate you and get you worked up.

They’re generally miserable people who delight in spreading, misery, anger, and negativity, through the comments they leave for other writers.

Sometimes, their hate is rooted in envy for you as a writer.

They hate the scent of success.

I’m curious, what type of reader are you?
