Born Mark Feld in 1947, and at nine years old he received his first guitar and immediately founded a skiffle band. Then, after being expelled from school at 15, Mark modeled men’s suits for catalogs and store window displays.

Then in 1964, he changed his name to Toby Tyler after recording his first song, All At Once. The tune was influenced by his teenage idol, Cliff Richard. But by 1965, his name changed again to Marc Bolan, an obvious inspiration from another songwriting hero, Bob Dylan.

“There is so little time for us all; I need to be able to say what I want quickly and to as many people as possible.”

After moving to Decca Records, Bolan recorded The Wizard, his first single with accompaniment from Jimmy Page. Bolan took more inspiration from the British rock scene of the day. His music incorporated works from Donavan to Syd Barrett.

Style became part of his legacy when Marc Bolan pioneered the Glm Rock era with T Rex to coincide with friend, David Bowie’s career. Marc was two weeks shy of his 30th birthday when he died tragically as a passenger in his girlfriend’s car.
