A Really Big Show

Ed Sullivan was born in Harlem, New York in 1901. He began his career as a journalist writing theater columns in New York. Sullivan worked as a sports writer and a syndicated columnist before television presented his greatest opportunity.
“If you do a good job for others, you heal yourself at the same time, because a dose of joy is a spiritual cure. It transcends all barriers.”
For years as The Ed Sullivan Show broke new barriers, critics lamented his lack of personality, his lack of any discernable talent. All the while, Ed Sullivan became the champion of new musical styles like rock ‘n roll, fresh young comedians, and talent from every spectrum.
Ed did it all before there ever was MTV or the internet, and he loved when comedians mimicked his distinctive accent. By 1972, Sullivan had broken records for the longest-running show, and eventually, the theater he filmed in would bear his name.

Miles Davis wasn’t merely a great jazz musician. Miles created his own genre. The legend that brought us the birth of cool, died in 1991 from pneumonia at 65.
Interesting Notes
In 1941, Ted Williams ended the major league baseball season with a batting average of .406. He was the last player ever to maintain an average of over .400 in the major leagues. That’s 80 years and counting.
Gone But Not Forgotten
Perhaps the most polarizing leader Canada has ever had, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was also the most flamboyant. The father of current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, pushed the boundaries of political thought. The architect of the Canadian Charte of Rights died in 2000 at 80 years old.
