Hidden Talent

Phil Hartmann was born in 1948 in Brantford, Ontario. His salesman father moved Phil and his family to the Northeast United States at the age of 10, and then to California.

“I benefit from the Mr. Potato Head syndrome. Put a wig and a nose and glasses on me, and I disappear.”

After finishing college for graphic arts, Phil started his own company. He was eventually responsible for 40 album covers for rock bands, including Poco and the Crosby, Stills, and Nash logo.

Hartmann, of course, became a beloved character actor and Saturday Night Live cast member. Phil’s distinctive voice brought him to The Simpsons to play several characters.

Tragically, Phil Hartmann was murdered in his sleep by his wife in 1998. He was 49. Before police arrived on the scene, she committed suicide while locked in her bedroom.

Today is:

Cherries Jubilee Day — I’m sure I’ll get some flack for this one, but hey. I don’t make these up.

Musical Ride

Many today don’t realize how deep, Deep Purple was. In 1969 at Royal Albert Hall, the band performed keyboardist Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was released later as a live album. Rock meets Classical has never been matched like this.

Interesting Notes

India became the first Asian nation to reach the orbit of Mars with its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) in 2014. India was also the first nation to achieve this on its first attempt.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Mike Webster was one of the greatest football centers of all time for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also the catalyst for research into CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Webster suffered from extreme trauma from head injuries incurred during his career.

Mike’s deep depression, dementia, and drug abuse contributed to his death of a heart attack at the age of 50.

Notable Births

1896 — F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “To be kind is more important than to be right. Many times, what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks but a special heart that listens.”

1941 — Linda McCartney said, “I would travel only by horse, if I had the choice.”
