Day Tripping: September 22
Catching A Tune

Although warned their child could be born with a severe disability and advised to abort, Andrea Bocelli was born in 1958 thanks to the instance of his mother. He was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma and eventually lost his sight at the age of 12.
“Even in the most beautiful music, there are some silences, which are there so we can witness the importance of silence. Silence is more important than ever, as life today is full of noise. We speak a lot about environmental pollution but not enough about noise pollution.”
Bocelli was discovered during auditions by an Italian rock star, Zucchero, for a demo in 1992. After hearing the demo tape, Luciano Pavarotti was instrumental in developing the young tenor’s career. Andrea Bocelli has since become one of the most beloved Classical voices of all time.
Today is:
Ice Cream Cone Day — the edible version was introduced at the World’s Fair in 1904. Before that, vendors sold ice cream in glass cone bowls which were licked clean and reused. A nice sugar cone seems more healthy now, doesn’t it?
Musical Ride
The song Happy Birthday went into the public domain in 2015. The highly contested copyright was ruled invalid in court after decades of collecting up to $2 million annually in royalties.
Interesting Notes
In 1920, a Grand Jury was convened to determine if the World Series championship had been fixed by the Chicago White Sox. Later, eight players including Shoeless Joe Jackson were convicted for intentionally throwing games. Jackson proclaimed his innocence for the rest of his life.
Gone But Not Forgotten
One of the most colorful characters in all of sports, Yogi Berra was famous for his humorous euphemisms. It ain’t over ’til it’s over, and 90% of baseball is half mental are only two of many.
Yet, Berra was also a Purple Heart recipient, one of the game’s best catchers of all time, and then manager. In eighteen years as a member of the New York Yankees, Yogi helped win 13 World Series Championships. He was a champion in every respect. Lawrence ‘Yogi’ Berra passed away in 2015 at the age of 90.
