Film Goddess

Jane Alice Peters was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1908. She grew up in wealth but spent her entire youth as a tomboy who loved volleyball and tennis. Her love of watching movies as a girl eventually led her to become Carole Lombard.

“I can’t imagine a duller fate than being the best-dressed woman in reality. When I want to do something, I don’t pause to contemplate whether I’m exquisitely gowned. I want to live, not pose!”

Lombard cited one of her best times in film was when she made slapstick comedies for Mack Sennett. She continued to succeed in comedy for fifteen years until her breakthrough role in My Man Godfrey in 1937.

When she married Clarke Gable in 1939, Carol stepped away from the screen for a while to devote herself to her marriage. Her popularity was still huge when returned home for a War Bond drive in late 1941 where she raised $2 million in one night.

Eager to get home to California, Carol and her mother boarded a military plane with 15 soldiers. Tragically, the plane crashed into a mountain peak south of Las Vegas, killing everyone on board.
