Day Tripping: October 20
No Sleeping Dogg

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. came into the world in 1971 in Long Beach, California. His father was a singer and Vietnam vet who left his family three months later. Calvin’s mother and step-father nicknamed him Snoopy because of his resemblance to the Peanuts character.
As a child, Snoopy worked bagging groceries and selling candy to help the family. An above-average student and regular churchgoer, Snoopy learned to play piano while singing with the church choir. But in 1993, he joined a gang started down a path of illegal activity.
“U don’t know where u goin’ unless u know where u come from.”
When he started recording music with help from Dr. Dre, Broadus took on the persona, Snoop Dogg. In 1995, he was then arrested and tried for murder but was acquitted one year later. At that moment, Snoop Dogg decided he needed to distance himself from the Gangsta lifestyle and committed himself to the music industry.
Snoop Dogg’s softer rap stylings led to a stellar recording career followed by producing. In 2013, he paid tribute to Herbie Hancock at the Kennedy Center Honors, calling the pianist the inventor of Hip Hop.
Snoop is also a certified football coach, starting a youth charity football program, a business investor, and entrepreneur.
