To say that Oscar Wilde was born out of his time would be a gross understatement. He was born in Dublin in 1854 to a father who was an ophthalmologist. Oscar's mother was a poet and the niece of a novelist, playwright.

As a child, Oscar Wilde was home educated and taught languages by his French maid and his German governess. In school, he was continually impressing his mates with funny and fantastic stories.

“Everyone may not be good but there’s always something good in everyone. Never judge anyone shortly because every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.”

After graduating from Oxford in England, Wilde return home and was reacquainted with his childhood sweetheart, Florence Balcombe. But she married Bram Stoker instead. Heartbroken, Wilde quietly returned to England, never to live in Ireland again.

Living in England however, Wilde was at constant odds with Victorian society. His encounter Queensbury family would serve as his ultimate undoing.

Today is:

World Food Day — Well…yeah.

Musical Ride

Creedence Clearwater Revival announced the end of their association in 1972 with a press release that read, “We don’t regard this as breaking up. We look at it as an expansion of our activities.” John Fogerty went on to a stellar solo career and the other bandmembers made feined attempts to rekindle the fire.

Interesting Notes

Over 320,000 gallons of beer burst into the streets of London from the Meux and Company brewery in 1814, causing The Great Beer Flood.

Oh, the humanity!

Gone But Not Forgotten

Scottish actress Deborah Kerr was nominated six times for Best Actress in the Academy Awards, without winning. It’s a record that still stands. Despite the snubs, Kerr was widely respected in the acting community. She passed away at 86 in 2007.

Notable Births

1925 — Angela Lansbury said, “Better to be busy than to be busy worrying.”

1958 — Tim Robbins said, “Notice what no one else notices and you’ll know what no one else knows.” [sure, sounds simple enough]

Maybe Angela should have been the motivational speaker. Just saying.
