Stage Royalty

The First Lady of American Theatre, Helen Hayes was born in 1900. She is the first person to have Emmy, Tony, and Oscar, and one of sixteen people to earn an EGOT, the Grand Slam of American awards.

Helen’s first talking film The Sin of Madelon Claudet garnered her first of two Oscars. With five Tonys and eight Emmys, her career as a performer spanned 80 years.

“From your parents, you learn to love and laughter and how to put one foot before the other. But when books are opened you discover that you have wings.”

Besides all the accolades from her professional career, Hayes felt most proud of her work developing the Helen Hayes Hospital. She was a tireless advocate of the center that focused on people’s rehabilitation from disabilities.

Musical Ride

James Brown visited the White House in 1972 to advocate for a day honoring Martin Luther King Jr. During the visit, he endorsed President for re-election. Many of Brown’s fans turned on him as a result.

Interesting Notes

The 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan were the first ever to be televised. NBC broadcast the opening ceremonies via the Syncom 3 satellite. And ever since then, the IOC has taken the Olympic spirit to new lows.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Nine years after the riding accident that left him paralyzed, Christopher Reeve succumbed to failing health in 2004, going into cardiac arrest from an antibiotic. Reeve then slipped into a coma and he passed away hours later at the age of 52.
