Day Tripping: November 20
Life’s Been Good

Joseph Fidler was born in 1947, the son of a US Air Force flight instructor. After Lt. Robert Fidler was killed in a plane crash, Joseph’s mother remarried when he was five.
Taking the name of his stepfather, Joe Walsh got his first guitar at age ten. From the moment he saw the Beatles, he knew his career path would be through the guitar.
During his college years, Joe toured around the Cleveland, Ohio area with his garage band, The Measles. The band recorded two songs that later appeared on an Ohio Express album.
“You can’t be a legend in your parent’s basement.”
Walsh was present as a student at Kent State University in 1970 during the massacre. He was deeply affected by the event and, deciding he didn’t need a degree that bad, he dropped out of college.
After the Measles, Joe and the James Gang played a gig in Detroit opening for Cream in 1968. After selling his Les Paul to Jimmy Page in 1969, Walsh was seen playing one night by The Who. Pete Townshend was so impressed by Joe’s playing, he invited the James Gang on a European tour.
With major hits already under his belt including A Life of Illusion, Walsh joined The Eagles in 1975. The resulting album was Hotel California.
Shoutout to Marcus for reminding my fuzzy brain of that phenomenal talent.
Today is:
Peanut Butter Fudge Day — slam dunk!
Musical Ride
At a show in San Francisco in 1973, 19-year-old Scot Haplin came on stage to finish a set with The Who after Keith Moon passed out on his drum kit.
Gone But Not Forgotten
For most of his career, Robert Altman was the antithesis to the classic Hollywood director. His naturalist style and comedic flair made Altman's films some of the most approachable pieces of the era. Robert Altman passed away in 2006 at age 81.
Notable Births
1908 — Alistair Cooke: “A professional is someone who can do his best work when he doesn’t feel like it.”
1942 — Norman Greenbaum: “If you ask me what I based “Spirit in the Sky” on … what did we grow up watching? Westerns! These mean and nasty varmints get shot and they wanted to die with their boots on. So to me, that was spiritual, they wanted to die with their boots on.”
