Temperance Tantrums

Spurred on by an early morning revelation she took as a divine message, Carrie Nation began her anti-alcohol crusade in 1900. Nation walked into Dobson’s Bar in Kiowa, Kansas, and started throwing rocks at the line of inventory behind the bar. Before hurling her ‘smashers’, Carie announced to the clientele that was present, “Men, I have come to save you from a drunkard’s fate”.

Changing her name legally to Carry A. Nation, she embarked on a campaign to rid the country of alcoholism. Her first husband had died from the disease two years after their marriage. Turning to a more destructive instrument as she continued through the state, Nation’s ‘hatchetations’ saw her arrested no less than 30 times. She carried on undaunted with growing support from other women, and tavern owners took to putting up signs that read, “All Nations Welcome But Carrie”.

The United States Supreme Court has never allowed cameras in court while in session. In 1937, Time Magazine published the second of only two known photographs ever taken during a live session. Time purchased the picture from an unnamed female photographer who devised a peephole in her purse. It is the only known image where all nine justices appear in the frame, and the identity of the photographer remains a mystery to this day.

The first photo occurred five years earlier when Dr. Erich Salomon, a German photographer hid a camera inside a fake cast on his arm to gain entry into chambers. His image is sharper but taken from an angle. Fortune Magazine later published that photo.

Dropping By

While on a tour of every Canadian province in 1939, King George VI of England and his wife, Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mother) became the first reigning British monarchs to visit the United States. Escorted by Canada’s Prime Minister Mackenzie King, the couple’s trip to Washington was facilitated as an official state visit from Canada.

With war looming in Europe, the tour by King George VI for the first time also to a sister nation of the Commonwealth was used as a support booster from across the Atlantic. A few days into the tour, President Franklin D. Roosevelt welcomed his guests at his Hyde Park estate and famously served hotdogs to the Royal couple.

Musical Milestones

Never a stranger to trouble, Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick was sentenced to 200 hours of community service for brandishing a loaded pistol at police when they arrived to investigate a disturbance at her house in 1994.

Narratives

The Curtain Theatre was London’s second theatre, built to house new Shakespeare performances in the Elizabethan times of the 16th century. In 2012, archaeologists discovered the remains of The Curtain under a pub in London.

Remembrance

The career of Christopher Lee spanned seven decades, first as a star of epic horror films like Dracula, then as Sherlock Holmes, and finally appearing in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed film, Hugo. Lee died in 2015 at age 93.
