Day Tripping: August 27
Unscheduled Flights

Born in 1877, Charles Rolls was a British innovator in the fields of aviation and automotive. At the age of 26, after his historic meeting with Henry Royce, the two men created a legacy of automotive elegance.
“Poor quality is remembered long after low prices are forgotten.”
Although Charles brought Rolls-Royce automobiles to prominence, his first love was aviation. He made over a hundred and fifty balloon ascents. But, in 1908 he was the guest passenger aboard a four-minute aeroplane flight piloted by Wilbur Wright.
That experience as the second Brit to fly a motorized aircraft motivated Rolls to pursue better power output for planes. Rolls dedicated his life to aviation and sadly, he died in an air crash at the age of thirty-two.
