Day Tripping: August 1
Whale of a tale

Herman Melville was born in 1819, but the novel that made him famous became popular a century after his birth. Moby Dick was such a critical success, William Faulkner said he wished he’s written it.
“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.”
Herman was not a good student or extraordinary in any way. He just sat down and wrote the best damn novel he knew how. Of course, it didn’t hurt that he experienced life at sea first.
Today is:
Raspberry Cream Pie Day — I’m down with that.
Respect for Parents Day — Shouldn’t this be a no brainer? Oh, wait. I just answered my own question.
Musical Ride
George Harrison hosted the first-ever charity concert with a star-studded lineup in 1971. He organized The Concert for Bangladesh with friend and fellow musician, Ravi Shankar. Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Billy Preston, and Eric Clapton all joined Harrison on stage at Madison Square Garden in New York.
John Lennon was supposed to appear, but after fighting with his wife Yoko Ono because George did not want her on stage, he left town and never made it to the show.
Interesting Notes
In 1981, MTV went on air, the first TV broadcast dedicated to exhibiting music videos.
Gone But Not Forgotten
It would be impossible to forget the walrus moustache and firm but friendly voice of Wilfred Brimley. His easy manner rarely changed throughout most of his screen appearances. Brimley was a dependable character. He passed one year ago at the age of 85.
