Day Tripping: April 24
Photos, Printouts, and Swordplay

Getting the Picture
A former bank clerk in Rochester, New York named George Eastman founded Kodak in 1888. With his subsequent introduction of the Kodak #1 camera which held 100 exposures, Eastman's company changed the landscape of photography forever. (Pun intended)
Over the next hundred-plus years, the Kodak Company continued to advance technologies for photographic quality and excellence. Sadly, when the company failed to maximize its lead in the development of digital imagery, the company filed for receivership in 2011. At the time, Kodak owned more than 100 digital patents.
Statement of Terms
One day after the document was printed, the Easter Proclamation of 1916 is read aloud on the steps of the Dublin General Post Office. The oration by Patrick Pearse signals the beginning of the Irish Uprising and clearly outlines its intent to achieve self-rule for Ireland. The proclamation calls for the end of British occupation by whatever means necessary.
Later, fifteen of the document’s signatories are executed by British firing squads, leading ultimately to the creation of the Irish republican party, Sinn Féin, and in 1919, Ireland.s declaration of independence.
Statesman Honoured
During his second turn as Britain’s Prime Minister, Winston Churchill receives the insignia of the Garter, the realm’s highest form of knighthood. Bestowed on him by Queen Elizabeth II three days after her 27th birthday, the statesman rises as Sir Winston Churchill at Windsor Castle.
Considering the efforts he made to protect Britain and the western world from destruction, the honour was due. Churchill also received the Nobel Prize for Literature that same year.
Musical Milestones
A rumour began to circulate and gain legs in 1976 that The Beatles were planning to reunite. Lorne Michaels, the Executive Producer of Saturday Night Live, went on camera and offered The Fab Four $3,000 which was union scale if they would appear on his show.
McCartney and Lennon watched the show together at John’s apartment in New York and considered showing up that night for a few minutes. Sadly, they decided against the idea.
Narratives
The $6,000 per night luxury suite at the Imperial Hotel in Vienna is listed on the top 100 rooms in the world. When staff for President George W. Bush called to book the suite and every other room on the floor in 2007, they were refused.
It turns out that Mick Jagger was in town with The Rolling Stones and had already booked all the rooms, and he wasn’t leaving. Mick was no fan of the President’s foreign policies.
Remembrance
After an American disc jockey floats presumed evidence on Beatles recordings that Paul McCartney has died, Paul himself comes out publicly in 1969 to proclaim there is no truth to the rumour.
The hoax about playing songs backwards and John stating he buried Paul at the end of Strawberry Fields Forever, have spawned various conspiracy theories and a so-called documentary film.
Honestly, people are like toys without batteries sometimes.
