Day Tripping: April 23
Pilsners, Pops, and Pandemics

It’s About Time
Creating a standard and practice for brewing and the sale of beer, Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria endorsed a document defining The German Beer Purity Law in 1516. The law states measurements and pricing for selling beer and serves notice that brewing of the product shall only consist of malts, hops and water.
Not Such A Good Time
Perhaps there should have been a similar edict for making Coca-Cola because, in 1985, the company decided to introduce a new formula. Let’s just say the response to the New Coke fell flat among consumers, and less than three months later, Coca-Cola was forced to bring back the original as Coke Classic.
Time Repeating
In 2003, after reporting 147 new cases and nine more deaths, Chinese officials ordered the closing of all schools in Beijing because of the SARS virus. Though most of the cases were limited to the South East Asian region, Canada was the one western country that felt the effects of the outbreak.
Fortunately for us all, the SARS epidemic has been virtually eradicated. Now, if only we could say the same about the current affliction.
Musical Milestones
The Sunday Times in London reports a story in 1995 about a Liverpool welder named Peter Hodgson who found a music reel in his attic containing old Beatles material. Paul McCartney had borrowed the reel and recorder from Hodgson’s father. The Beatles Anthology album includes songs from the reel like Hello Little Girl.
Narratives
YouTube is launched on this day in 2005. The streaming platform becomes so popular, Google gives up on competing with Google Video, and buys YouTube one year later.
Remembrance
From his fun and meteoric interviews with Muhammad Ali to the announcement of John Lennon’s assassination on Monday Night Football, Howard Cosell was always at the center of the moment. He passed away in 1995.
