Day Tripping: April 1
Big Finding, Tragic Ending, No Fooling

Mystery Solved
The ruins of the lost city of Pompeii were rediscovered by Rocgue Joaquin de Alcubierre of Spain in 1748. While he was excavating under contract to King of Naples Charles III of Bourbon, Alcubierre found remains of artifacts and still intact walls of the city. Pompeii had been buried for nearly 1500 years by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
A man named Domenico Fontana first rediscovered Pompeii in 1599 while digging a canal, but it is believed he reburied what he found. It wasn’t until a military engineer, Alcubierre went deeper to uncover the scope of history and art that had been missing for so long.
Murderous Thug
Motorcycle patrolmen Edward Wheeler and rookie H.D. Murphy are shot dead at a country intersection on Texas route 114 near Grapevine in 1934. The two officers, one recently married, the other engaged, were killed by Clyde Barrow when they approached his stopped vehicle.
Clyde and his partner in crime, Bonnie Parker were considered heroes by many as they robbed banks during the depression era. That was until Clyde committed this unspeakable crime. Bonnie & Clyde should never have been portrayed as romantic figures.
Marvel In The Sky
The world’s only successful vertical take-off and short landing aircraft, the Hawker Siddeley Harrier was put into service in 1969 by the British Royal Air Force. Designed for use in small spaces like car parks, the jet was eventually modified for use on aircraft carriers.
The Harrier was unique from its competition in more ways than just vertical take-off. The thrust required to achieve the feat of hovering made the plane very difficult to handle and was designed to fly below sonic speed.
Musical Milestones
Marvin Gaye, who set the tone for the future of Mowtown, was fatally shot by his father in 1984 during an argument in his apartment. Marvin Gaye Sr. was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. His son would have turned 45 the following day.
