Day 6: The First Memory I Have From My Childhood

And 25 to go

Sup? Photo by author.

I don’t know what I was thinking when I came up with this prompt. I basically have no memories from my early childhood. I can look through photos, and I can feel a vague sense of familiarity… but I don’t remember much at all.

The earliest memory I think I have can’t be fact-checked and I’ve run it by Mum and she can’t remember it. I was around five — I know that’s a late age for a first memory and even then, it’s sketchy — and in my brother’s bedroom. I opened his cupboard to get out a toy and as I opened the door a giant red fire truck fell out from the top shelf and hit me in the head.

I remember Mum wrapping a big white bandage around my head, looking in the mirror and seeing the blood peek through on my forehead. It seems such a random memory and I don’t even know if it really happened. Maybe it did, maybe the reason why my memory is so shit is that I received a concussion from the big red fire-truck.

Doesn’t it seem oddly specific for it to not have happened? A red fire truck.

It’s too random and Mum can’t verify it ever happened so who knows?

Perhaps my earliest memory would be from pre-school. I started school late so I would have been six. I had a sticker book and I brought it in for show and tell. My favourite ones were these super shiny dinosaur stickers, and I remember having a giant sparkly stegosaurus.

A redheaded devil boy in my class stole my shiny stegosaurus sticker. His name was Robert Payne and much to my dislike, he remained in my class every year up until around grade seven.

I hated him, he was a big bully. Remember the movie Billy Madison?

Robert Payne was exactly like The O’Doyles. If only his family drove over a banana peel and lost control of their car off a cliff.

He was the first bully I remember and I still miss my shiny stegosaurus sticker.

Neither memories are ground-breakingly fascinating, in fact, they’re both pretty mundane and questionable. Here’s hoping you guys have better, ymore interesting memories than I have. Cause mine were pretty shitty.

I loved reading your own personal takes on the sickest you’ve ever been. And I apologise for forcing your hand. Check out others’ responses:
