You look at Dara. “This is getting out of hand,” you say quietly. “It’s good that we’re away from the dangers of the village, but now…” You hesitate, looking towards Ballax. “We should go, swift and quiet. Finish what we started.”

“Just the two of us?”

You nod. “Bruno can look after the others. You’re stealthy — fast. If I’m gonna rescue my family, that’s what’s needed. A big group will get spotted, and wiped out by greater numbers.”

She thinks about this for a moment, then nods. “For your family,” she says.

Together, you move off quietly through the trees.
