Creating a Sacred Life

Day 25: How your daily actions show reality your true desires

Photo by Rebecca Peterson-Hall on Unsplash

Nature was my guide this morning as I ventured out for my early morning walk. It looked as if someone painted the wispy clouds with a giant brush to create a piece of art in the sky. I looked up in wonder as I realized how our neighbor’s tree connected with ours through a highway of twisted branches, where the squirrels and birds could travel between our gardens. We are all connected, just like these branches. As I step into this 100-day journey today on day 25 of studying the book The Infinite Self by Stuart Wilde, I smile with joy.

Making our lives sacred is something we can do to show reality and show God that we are here to do something beautiful in the time that we have. If we use our time in meaningful ways, we can know in our hearts that we are spending our time wisely.

To make your life sacred, you only have to look at your reflection in the bathroom mirror and say, “This is sacred.” Then start acting in a sacred way. Act deliberately, act with intention. If, in any given situation, you can’t act powerfully, don’t act. Preserve your energy, and don’t trash it by acting ineffectively. -Stuart Wilde

Every day on this path I make adjustments to make my life more sacred, to act with purpose. My daily ritual starts with giving. We have a lovely, carved wooden statue of the Buddha on the coffee table in our living room. This Buddha came from my husband’s aunt when she traveled long ago to the Philippines, where my father-in-law lived in his retirement years. Every morning I place a piece of fruit on the table for the Buddha. Later on, I light a small tealight candle. I am giving thanks for the abundance and light life has offered to me.

Lately, I am starting to notice all of how I can create a more sacred life through my daily actions. One area that I am working on is accounting and paperwork. Although I am a professional organizer and keep everything neat and tidy, I have a lot of resistance to doing my accounting. Being aware of this resistance is the first step to creating better actions and habits around making sure my spreadsheets and accounting get done regularly. This week I made a promise to myself to complete all of my paperwork through this month. Then, I will create a special ritual around getting this work done weekly. In this way, my paperwork and the abundance coming in are treated as sacred, as it should be. That, in turn, will allow for more abundance to flow. When reality observes that I am taking great care of what I have, more can come to me.

Concentration, remember, is love. When you concentrate on something, you love it. If you want to create a sacred path for yourself, concentrate upon yourself, love yourself, and act in sacred ways. Teach it to others. -Stuart Wilde

Another way I show life that my days are sacred is by taking care of my home. By having routines in place to make sure the dishes are clean, the laundry is clean and put away, floors are clean, and our environment is tidy, we are showing life that we care for and love our home. Caring for our home brings us daily joy and abundance as we enjoy meals here, rest here and enjoy life. By looking upon chores as daily rituals and offerings to life, we can treat them as sacred rather than something we “have to do.” I love seeing the results when my students start creating habits and routines in their homes. They light up with joy and accomplishment. I know that abundance will follow when they create order and harmony in their homes.

Out of sacredness and humility comes a natural sense of gratitude. So take time to be grateful. It’s a beautiful and humble thing. It becomes an affirmation that says, “I am in control. I’m eternal. I’m not in a rush. This is a beautiful journey. With all its ups and downs, it’s still beautiful.” -Stuart Wilde

I am so very grateful at this moment that I have my husband and my son with me. Every day I get to work alongside them, spend time with them, and just be graced by their presence in our home. This morning I was greeted by my son as he arose earlier than usual just as I was about to do my meditation. I was grateful that he was awake and there with me. Yes, it changed my routine a bit, but being able to chat with him in the mornings and the afternoons lights up my life. His presence showed me this morning that no matter what the routine, there will be change sometimes. Life will give you the joy you need if you are willing to receive it.

My prayer and intention for you today is to look at ways in which you can make your daily routines more sacred. How can you take care of your home? How can you take care of your inner self? How can you take care of your body? How can you take care of the Earth? These are all great questions for all of us on this journey called life.

What do you regard as sacred in your home and your life?
