ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND “WHAT IFS”
Could the Paparazzi Car Chase of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have Been Avoided?
Are AI Image Generators the End of the Paparazzi?
Regular readers will know I have fun making sensationalist AI-generated images. Whether it’s hilarious selfies of Moms bungee-jumping with their babies, or heartwarming pics of Prince Harry and Prince William hugging, AI art generators have you covered. So I started thinking: why do we even have paparazzi? And is it another job that AI will make a thing of the past?

On Tuesday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were victims of a high-speed chase in a taxi through the streets of New York. Accounts vary—even Mayor Eric Adams says they might be making a mountain out of a molehill (is it even possible to have a 2-hour car chase through the streets of NYC? That’s the running time of some Fast and the Furious films) but two things are for certain: it was a nightmare for the Sussexes, and it was totally unnecessary.

We live in a world where AI is increasingly capable of performing tasks that were once humans. From self-driving cars to chatbots, AI is reshaping the world of work in profound ways. So why not have AI replace the paparazzi?

And it’s not just the paparazzi. The implications extend to a broader range of jobs in the photography industry, from weddings to loved ones to pets. While AI won’t completely replace these professions in the near future, it could certainly supplement their work and change the nature of their art.

The potential of AI to reshape jobs isn’t just about replacing human labor; it’s about augmenting our abilities. It’s about empowering photographers to capture moments in innovative ways, enabling us to tell stories creatively. It’s about moving from a culture of intrusion to a culture of imagination.

And let’s not forget: the purpose of photographs, whether snapped by a paparazzo or generated by AI, is to tell a story. We have the opportunity to tell richer, more varied stories. We can explore ‘what ifs’, like the imagined reunion of Prince Harry and Prince William, and create entirely new ones. Because let’s be honest: those photographs were for tabloid entertainment.

But as we embrace the potential of AI, we must also be vigilant. We must ensure that the use of AI respects people and is used in a manner that is ethical and fair. And while we explore the ‘what ifs’ of AI-generated images, we must also remember the value of authenticity and truth in photography.

Of course, there are ethical considerations and downsides. The use of AI technology to generate images of people without their consent is an issue. But it’s clear AI has the potential to transform the way we capture images, and could make invasive practices like paparazzi chases a relic of the past.
But as Prince Harry and Meghan’s incident in NYC highlights, maybe it’s time to rethink photography. Say goodbye to the Paparazzi, and hi to AI.
