AI Artist Redesigns Flounder 🐠 in Disney’s Live-Action Movie “The Little Mermaid” 🧜🏾♀️
Fixing Flounder: Making a photorealistic fish cute (not freaky)
When I was a kid, Ursula was the scariest thing about Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Now, it looks like the next generation will be traumatized by the pallid, Steve Buscemi-esque appearance of the beloved character Flounder in the upcoming live-action remake, swimming into cinemas May 26, 2023.

After receiving a tidal wave 🌊 of reactions on Twitter, it was clear that the redesigned Flounder needed a makeover. Fear not, Little Mermaid fans! I have taken it upon myself to dive deep into the digital ocean and use the AI art generator Midjourney to reimagine the photorealistic CGI Flounder.
You may have seen my previous work, where I used Jasper Art to bring more racial diversity to Disney animated classics and envisioned what Disney classics might look like if they were directed by Tim Burton 🎃️
Now, I present to you a gallery of improved Flounder images that will hopefully make you fall in love with Ariel’s best friend all over again 💙🐠
Flounder’s Makeover: AI Art to the Rescue
In this article, I’ll showcase these stunning new Flounder images, which pay homage to the original animated character while still embracing the live-action spirit of the Halle Bailey-led film 🧜🏾♀️🎬. Join me as we explore the under-the-sea world of AI artistry and discover how with the right mix of nostalgia, creativity, and technology, AI can truly be a part of our world.

💫 Can Disney Use AI to Improve Concept Art? 🏰
It’s no secret that Disney has a long history of embracing technology, from their pioneering work in animation to more recent forays into CGI. With AI-generated art becoming increasingly popular, one can’t help but wonder if Disney could have benefited from incorporating AI art technology into their creative process when designing the live-action The Little Mermaid.
Disney and the Future of AI Art 🤖
There are whispers Disney may be training an AI art generator to create AI art internally. By tapping into Disney’s extensive collection of art assets, this technology has the potential to transform in-house art production processes and foster a more efficient and dynamic creative atmosphere.
Envisioning a More Faithful Flounder 🎨
In the case of Flounder, perhaps Disney could have used AI art to create a more faithful, yet live-action-compatible, rendition of the character that would resonate better with fans. While my reimagined Flounders are not officially licensed, they serve as a testament to the power and potential of AI art in enhancing the creative process, even for a behemoth like Disney.
As we anticipate the Little Mermaid’s release on May 26, let’s also consider the exciting possibilities AI art could bring to Disney’s creative landscape.
