Why this specific topic about commenting?
Just so you know, this Medium story was inspired by comments and a request from my good friend Robert Shaneyfelt. We had a great conversation on a Medium publication (ILLUMINATION) where I mentioned a particular commenting strategy I use.
See how commenting can also help with new ideas and topics to write about. There are so many benefits to commenting, infinite, in fact.
Robert wanted to know more, so, I decided to share my commenting strategy step by step. It is really easy to follow along, and the results will “knock your socks off”, I can assure you.
Apart from that, I will let you know that commenting is among some of the best ways to build responsive targeted audiences. And although I have done several posts about the benefits of commenting, I have not yet shared this specific strategy, because I am still testing it.
Basically, that means you will be testing it with me, but I have seen awesome growth in followers, claps, and comments.
Besides, it was a kind request from one of my top readers and followers. And I am happy to comply and to provide the best guide I can. All you have to do is follow a few really simple steps. Are you ready?
Doing the needed research by commenting
Before we get started on the research part of commenting, first understand the purpose of commenting. Commenting is a means of getting recognized and building trust.
Commenting is about getting readers to your profile, therefore there is absolutely no need to share links in comments. With the exception of when your readers ask you to share information.
To get started, simply go to the Medium home page and scroll through the Medium story feed. Then look for the posts most relevant to your own knowledge, topics, and niche.
But you also want to visit each Medium writer's profile for the story you plan to comment on. Be sure that from content to profile, it all relates to your knowledge and topics.
Also, focus more on professional profiles. This means —
Clear Profile Picture.
Profile About Section.
Profile Lists.
General Profile Presentation.
Profile Summary.
Profile Followers.
Profile Following.
Profile Followers To Following Ratio.
There is also another way to ensure someone is who they say they are. Just enter their full name into Google or any search engine for that matter. Because all professionals have a built-up online presence.
Search result pages in search engines will confirm that when you search their full names. In case you’re wondering, please feel free to do this with my own full name (Deon Christie).
Carefully select the Medium stories you wish to comment on, and writers you would like to connect with by simply scrolling through the Medium home page feed.
We will get to the targeting part in more detail under the last heading of this article, “Building a targeted audience with commenting.”. Because there are several areas of targeting to pay attention to, so you can get the most from this commenting strategy.
Adding relevant Medium stories to a reading list
Once you have decided on the relevant posts you want to comment on, you want to add them to a reading list. There are also other things you want to pay attention to —
Author Profile.
Comments Count.
Comments Date.
With all this, you’re going to have to use your own judgment. We have already covered what to look for in a professional medium profile. But you also want to note the number of comments on the Medium story along with the date.
Try focusing on more recent comments with posts by professional writers. I strongly suggest comments that are from a few months old to a few minutes or a couple of days.
Then you simply click on the “list icon” and a drop-down window will open showing all your lists as illustrated below. If you have not yet created any lists, Medium adds the first “Reading List” automatically.

Normally with a little padlock next to it. You can just choose to save the Medium stories you intend to comment on under the “Reading List”. Just as long as you can come back to the Medium stories you have chosen.
The point is to save your selection of Medium stories you intend to comment on to any list. You can choose to create your own list, or just use the “Reading List”.
Comments that are more likely to get noticed
You never just post a “quick comment”. There is no such thing as “quick” when it comes to success with anything. And please, stop with the robotic commenting and duplicate responses.
All you’re achieving with that is proving to your audience that your content is just about as fake as your profile. Don’t be “that guy”. Be the guy that solves problems.
You don’t just comment so your face (Medium profile) gets seen. No, you also comment to start a conversation. Comment in such a way that you receive a response back. Get a conversation going when responding to other comments on a particular post.
But follow the same principles when adding your own comment to the particular Medium story. Add value to the topic, for that you will have to actually read the entire article you wish to comment on.
Comments like “I like it” — “Great post” — “Thank you” — “Nice post” — “Thanks for sharing” and similar comments do not attract a lot of attention. However, comments in the following manner might.
“Outstanding post, (Author Name), a great read and well written too! You mention several great browser extensions, thank you for the extra tools. Have you ever tried Keywords Everywhere for keyword search volume analysis?”
Now, which of the above-mentioned kind of comments do you think would attract the most attention? Always offer value and give your reader or author a reason to respond to your comment.
Yes, I know that especially long-form content can be less pleasurable or preferred. Personally, I use the Medium audio option because I prefer video and audio content. Just hit the play button as illustrated below on any Medium story.

We all have our own unique ways to take more information in and remember it better. For me, it happens to be video and audio, it kind of gets stuck in my head.
But regardless of your preferred method, it is important to read the entire Medium story. You cannot offer value to the topic if you do not know exactly what the Medium story is about.
That makes sense, right? Offering value is the one thing with making money online that will never get old. The better the value you offer, the better your boost and response rates will be.
Respond to both stories and existing comments
An easy way to keep track of which posts you have already commented on. Only clap for the Medium story once you have read the story and commented on the story.
But also be sure to respond to other comments on the same post where you leave your comment. It is one of the fastest ways I know about, reaching like-minded writers and people.
Unfortunately, Medium has a commenting limit of 100 comments per 24 hours. Now, that might seem like a lot. But trust me when I say, it really is not. You will be surprised at how fast you can reach 100 comments.
100 comments are nothing in comparison to the response you will get by following these simple commenting guidelines. Most days I run out rather early, and then just concentrate on writing a few Medium stories.
I almost forgot, that there is something else you want to add to the recognition mix, so to speak. Highlighting areas of the medium story you are commenting on.
To attract even more attention, use the highlighted text to draw more attention to your comment. As illustrated below, simply hover your cursor over the highlighted area.

You will notice a pop-up window with a little comment icon. Click on that and the highlighted text will be included, as seen on the right-hand side of the illustration.
It just makes your comment more visible when readers scroll through the comments. Remember that commenting is a tool used by all successful writers, marketers, and entrepreneurs online.
Building a targeted audience by commenting
There are 3 ways to leverage Medium for more response, readers, and visitors. Commenting, Medium Publications, and your own Medium Stories. Medium publications however is a topic already covered in several other posts.
Create a certain balance between publishing Medium stories and commenting. Considering the 100 comments limit currently on Medium, be selective about whom you respond to. Pay attention to things like —
Interest Targeting.
Profile Summary.
Topic Targeting.
GEO Location Targeting.
This is important because you want followers, claps, and comments from people actually interested in your content. We’ve all heard the saying, “Surround yourself with people on the same mission as you!”.
Building an online audience is one thing, building an active online audience is quite another altogether. But if you follow along with these simple steps, you will do just fine.
