Let’s explore!
Have You Heard of the Hatpin Panic?
written by Chelsea Rose
Thursday, May 28th, 1903. New York City. Kansan tourist Leoti Blaker boarded a crowded Fifth Avenue stagecoach at 23rd Street. As the coach jostled down the road, Leoti noticed that the man sitting next to her kept inching closer and closer.
Then, the man started to touch her. Seemingly accidentally at first, but then, purposefully. When the predatory man lifted his arm and draped it low across her back, Leoti had enough.
Unfortunately for this pervert, Leoti Blaker was not a woman to mess with! In an act that should be heavily applauded, she removed her foot-long hat pin and stabbed into the creep’s arm, all the while maintaining a calm expression. It is said that the man screamed and scurried off the coach at the next stop.
He Jumped, I Saw it, And I Cannot Unsee It Or What Happened Next
written by Rick Martinez
About a month or so ago, several Oyster Catchers decided to make nests on the roof of my building here in Norway. Ok, it’s not “MY” building but rather the place where I live. The Oyster Catchers, or OCs, are usually discouraged from nesting on the roof, but this little couple managed to sneak in and set up a house. And the rule of thumb here is that if they set up a nest, then you gotta leave them alone.
Protecting the environment and stuff.
The spot where they set up is a slight outcropping on the 2nd floor, and from the 3rd floor we can peer down at them as they set up to you know…make some Nordic nookie. And no, we didn’t watch them bumping uglies, that would be weird. I’m just sharing so you have a visual of how we can see them on the roof.
Fast Fashion Is Hurting Our Planet
written by Josephine Crispin
My common sense and usual practice prevailed. That of choosing good-quality clothing because they last, instead of buying low-cost clothing and footwear because they are poorly made.
The latter might give a fleeting satisfaction — a bargain! — but wearing cheap fashion could put you in an embarrassing situation. Think of clothing malfunction when you’re out in public — the spaghetti strap of your top may suddenly get detached or a button of a blouse or skirt may fall off.
As I was to realize years later, the slipshod make of fast fashion is not a key concern.
Yellow From Coldplay Sounds Even Better in a Pub in Switzerland
written by Felipe Xavier
On our second day in the city of Zermatt, my wife decided we would go out dressed as bride and groom to take amazing photos through the city.
After this interesting adventure, we went back to our hotel to relax a little bit and take a bath, but we intended to go out later. We also ate because we found out that like every small town, life stops after 8 p.m.
While walking around town earlier we saw a sign talking about live music at a pub starting at 11 p.m. My wife and I are crazy about music so we could not miss this opportunity. This pub was a couple of blocks from our hotel so it was a date.
Solo Traveling In the City of Light
written by Shalaka Laxman
My first ‘solo’ trip happened by accident.
My friend was supposed to visit me in London for a week in February 2017, and we decided to book a fun weekend trip to Lisbon to escape the dreary UK winter. We booked our flights and made a list of everything we wanted to explore in the ‘City of Light.’
Two weeks before the trip, my friend canceled and left me with a choice: set off on my first proper solo adventure or bail on the journey altogether. As you may have guessed, I chose the former and decided to explore Lisbon alone that weekend.
Don’t Let Your Today Be Loaded With Yesterday’s Regrets
written by Esther George
I had a broken relationship with Yesterday that I was not willing to let go of. Yesterday has a lot of resonance for me. I held on to the flames of my devotion and wished deep in my heart that it would never burn out.
Wounds remind me of the damage life has inflicted, and my survival speaks of accomplishment. They shaped who I am today. There is one minor problem. I continue to relive those moments. No sooner had I started digging into old wounds, I gave them the power to inflict pain upon me, and they began to bleed again.
Freedom belongs to us every moment. But just because we’re free doesn’t mean we claim ownership of that freedom. We intentionally ignore the fact that as long as we’re behind the wheel of this vehicle called Today, we have the freedom to decide where we want to go. Freedom to think differently. Freedom to choose. Freedom to walk in another direction.
Finding My Calling and My Crew on a British Train Platform
written by Walter Bowne
“Your religion?” I asked.
“Yeh, mate. Monty Python is our religion. Can’t trust the Anglican Church of England anymore.”
I moved closer. I was still a little frightened. After all, Hitler loved cats. And serial killers can still quote classic British comedy, right? But then one of the guys offered me a can of something — I’m not sure, but I told them cheers, but I already had enough.
And then they rather welcomed me — and wanted to know how a Yankee knew his Python.
