International Music Day?

Every day is Music Day for me

My first contact with music was at church, as a kid. I grew up in a Christian home filled up with music and also a lot of musicians in the family. For that reason, this form of art was always there. If not in my mom’s recorder, on my uncle’s guitar.

I had a dream of becoming a professional musician. I used to practice my rock n’ roll headbanging with a broom for a guitar. I wanted to be a guitarist but my first instrument was the drums although I’ve always had a good voice and practiced it a lot growing up.

After many years, I learned how to play the guitar but I was never really good at it. Just enough to play a few songs.

I gave up the musician dream

I had about 5 bands during my teenage years and 2 as a grown-up. I even tried to go solo when Youtube cover artists became a thing. One thing I discovered was that the industry is very hard and you have to sell your soul to be a huge success.

I am from Brazil and the Music Industry here is not different from The U.S. or Europe and other places. You gotta play what most people want to listen to. That’s not what an artist needs to deliver, in my opinion.

Artists are supposed to make us feel things. Sometimes they’re gonna make us laugh but they also need to make us cry. Art can be both entertaining and controversial.

It’s like writing. Yes, I am writing about a topic that many people are probably discussing today but I am writing what I want to write. It’s not what the “industry of writing” requires me to.

I didn’t want to play what everyone else wants in order to make money. I think, in this case, what I wanted always came first.

Singing at my wedding

I got married last year. My wife is also a musician, so most of our friends and family were expecting that we would sing at the ceremony but we didn’t. We thought it’d be very tacky, this is very common in Brazil.

So we decided to surprise people. It’s very usual that first dance of the couple, right? Well, I don’t dance at all. The idea we had was that instead of this first dance we would offer a pocket Jazz show for our guests. So we did, and it was a night to remember.

Music is everywhere

I talked about many moments of my life music-related because it’s one of the most important things for me. It’s been with me through the saddest moments but it also filled the happiest with joy.

Since I've known music, I don't remember if I went even one day without listening to any kind of music.

I can’t imagine how the world would be if there were no music. Have you ever thought about it? I have never met anyone that doesn’t enjoy music. Some people don’t like movies, books, paintings, chocolate, meat, beer, whatever, but not music.

Music is a world general agreement.
