Check Out Unreal Engine 5’s Latest Interesting Tools
Epic has announced their new procedural gaming building tools for Unreal Engine 5.

Epic Games has just announced some new procedural tools for Unreal Engine 5.2, the next version of the popular game engine.
These tools will enable game developers to create game worlds using a small set of hand-crafted models while Unreal Engine 5 procedurally generates the rest of the environment. This feature was demonstrated during Epic’s State of Unreal event, where it received a round of applause.
According to Nick Penwarden, Epic’s VP of Engineering, this feature is “pretty cool.” The demonstration showed a designer placing a large rock formation in the middle of a creek bed. The logs automatically connected the rock to the surrounding environment.
Penwarden explained that the feature could communicate with other procedural elements in the scene, such as the creek bed, and that a designer could easily move the assembly to direct the player to drive to the left, for example. Everything would then update to accommodate that change.
Penwarden went on to demonstrate how the procedural tools can allow for larger changes to the game world, such as mass deforestation and reforestation.
He explained that the 4km by 4km play space was made from a 200m by 200m square that was hand-built by a developer, with the rest being procedurally generated by Unreal.
The demonstration was running in real-time on an Intel Core i9 13900K and an Nvidia RTX 4090, which is quite impressive. These features are set to be included in Unreal Engine 5.2, and a preview of the new engine is already available.
This could be a big time-saver for developers, as they can create larger game worlds more quickly using a small set of hand-crafted models.
Penwarden said that the team started by hand-crafting the original part of the level to set the visuals and art direction for the entire game world. They then built out procedural tools that allowed them to create a much larger play space more quickly. The result is a game world that looks great and is procedurally generated in real time.
Final Words
The new procedural tools for Unreal Engine 5.2 are a promising development for game developers.
This feature allows them to create larger game worlds with less effort, and the resulting game worlds look great.
It remains to be seen how this will affect game development in the future, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
