Check Out Overwatch 2’s Newest Samoan Hero
Players are saying this new hero looks a lot like Maui from Moana.

In some of my earlier posts, I’ve chatted about all kinds of stuff related to Overwatch. You can find those linked at the end of this post. But for today, let’s dive into the latest Overwatch 2 hero, Mauga!
Blizzard has dropped its newest hero into the Overwatch 2 arena, and this time, it’s a hulking Samoan tank named Mauga. Players couldn’t help but notice that Mauga bears a striking resemblance to the Polynesian demigod Maui from Pixar’s animated masterpiece, Moana. But it’s not just a visual similarity, as Mauga slyly references Maui with his voice lines.
The discovery of Mauga’s not-so-subtle homage to Maui was brought to light by the ever-vigilant gaming YouTuber, Dan Bumbler. He shared a quick video clip on the internet’s go-to platform, Twitter, where Mauga delivers two voice lines. The first line is a simple:
“Pleasure’s all mine.”
But it’s the second one that makes eyebrows raise — Mauga sings:
“You’re welcome.”
Bumbler couldn’t contain his excitement and remarked:
“Y’know, I had a suspicion, and OF COURSE MAUGA SINGS HIS ‘You’re welcome’ VOICE LINE. Blizz, u cheeky bastards.”
If you’re a fan of Moana, you’ll immediately recognize the reference. But for the uninitiated, Maui, upon meeting Moana in the film, belts out a full-fledged musical number aptly titled “You’re Welcome.” In the song, he repeats the phrase “You’re welcome” with gusto, and it’s quite a catchy tune.
Now, when it comes to this delightful revelation, the odds of it being a mere coincidence are about as slim as Mauga and Maui are large. However, Mauga’s resemblance to Maui has aroused controversy among fans.
Some are unhappy with what they see as a stereotypical portrayal of a Samoan man, while others argue that those who make such comparisons are just stirring the pot. With the revelation that Mauga appears to be inspired by Maui, the waters become even murkier.
But let’s not get bogged down in the controversy. Mauga’s impact on the Overwatch 2 gameplay is yet to be fully understood. What we do know is that he boasts some intriguing abilities, including damage reduction and the prowess to dual-wield chainguns, which are bound to add a fresh twist to the game dynamics.
However, it’s crucial to note that a new character alone is unlikely to be a game-changer for Overwatch 2, especially when it’s grappling with a less-than-stellar reputation.
Final Words
So, whether you’re thrilled by Mauga’s Maui-inspired antics or skeptical about his portrayal, one thing’s for sure — Overwatch 2 is in dire need of a boost, and Mauga alone might not be enough to get it back on track.
At least we’ve got an entertaining new character to shake things up in the world of Overwatch.
