You must at least know some of the lyrics, recently the song Livin’ La Vida Loca was one of the songs chosen to be part of the 2022 Class of the National Recording Registry.

Included in the list are albums such as Alicia Keys’ “Songs in A Minor” and singles such as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” along with with important inductions of hip-hop and Latin music, including recordings by Linda Ronstadt, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan and the Buena Vista Social Club. — Source: Library of Congress Blog

And the artist, the voice behind the hit song is no other than Latin pop superstar Ricky Martin, who you can say is indeed Livin’ La Vida Loca, a life that many dreamers would love to have.

Ricky Martin, believe it or not, has been singing since he was 12 as part of the boyband Menudo and when he started his solo career, he became an even more successful singer.

In 1999 when Livin’ La Vida Loca came out, it cemented his claim as the Latin pop superstar, there is no doubt he also paved the way for other Latin artists including JLo, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, and Enrique Iglesias.

In 2010 he came out as a gay man. It took him years to finally be at peace with his sexuality, and his career didn't suffer as he feared, or the people around him feared.

It was only this year that things took an ugly turn for the Latin pop superstar when he was accused of domestic violence.

The accusation wasn’t made by his husband Jwan Yosef who he married in 2017 to whom he shares custody of four lovely kids, but the accusation was made by a family member, his nephew.

A scandal that would have ruined his career and his life.

If found guilty Ricky Martin would spend the next fifty years in a Puerto Rican jail because of the aggravating circumstance of incest.

An alleged incestuous relationship with his nephew led to episodes of domestic violence as claimed by his nephew.

His nephew filed a case and a restraining order was issued by a Puerto Rican judge.

It was later revealed that the petitioner and the one who is accusing Ricky Martin of domestic violence is no other than his nephew who goes by the name Dennis Yadiel Sanchez, it was confirmed by Ricky Martin’s brother, Eric Martin.

If it was simple domestic violence, the penalty would not be as grave as the one Ricky Martin is facing. Incest isn’t only condemned in Puerto Rico but is an aggravating circumstance that could make Ricky Martin get the maximum jail time of 50 years.

Technically Ricky Martin, if convicted, could live the rest of his life in jail. And that is far crazier than what Ricky Martin meant when he sang Livin’ La Vida Loca.

The headlines were explosive and social media was ablaze with details of the accusation.

Never did anyone imagine that the Latin pop superstar, who is at the peak of his career, a well-loved figure in the LGBTQIA community, a husband and a loving father, someone living the best years of his life, would one day find himself embroiled in a scandal that could have gotten very ugly.

The following weeks were difficult for Ricky Martin, on the day that he appeared in court via Zoom, his nephew withdrew his case, thus the judge decided to dismiss the case against the Latin pop superstar.

On July 21, 2022, the day that Ricky Martin was supposed to appear in court via a ZOOM meeting to answer allegations of domestic abuse which resulted in a protective order issued by a Puerto Rican judge,

Case dismissed

The truth did set Ricky Martin free, but it almost cost him his career and his freedom.

Many celebrities are accused of crimes mostly involving domestic violence. Some celebrities never recover after a scandal.

In a statement, Ricky Martin shared with Billboard,

“It’s been almost four decades since I’ve been working as an artist, under the public eye, and I’ve never had to deal with something so hurtful like I’ve lived through these last few weeks,” he said in a video that was shared with the media by his publicist.

“I was victim of a lie.

Unfortunately, the attack came from a family member … I only wish him the best, for him to find the light.

A lie can cause so much harm.

It harmed me, my husband, my kids, my parents, my family. I couldn’t defend myself because there was a legal process I had to follow where I had to be silent until I’d be able to speak to a judge.

Today was the day. Now, it’s time for me to heal. I’m very hurt. I will find peace, the necessary silence to see the light again at the end of the tunnel, like I’ve always been able to.” — Ricky Martin’s statement to Billboard

Final words

What can happen in a day? A lot, and we all know it. Did Will Smith anticipate what would happen at the Oscars, on the same night he received his first Oscar but he also slapped Chris Rock?

One day Ricky Martin was at the top of his game, he was busy being a husband, a father, and an actor. He was cast to be part of the new Apple TV series, Mrs. American Pie.

Recently he shared on his Instagram account photos of himself at a location shoot for Mrs. American Pie, it only means he is back working on projects that would have been shelved if the scandal dragged on for months.

Will you get your career back once you are innocent of an accusation? It depends, as Ricky Martin himself said, only when truth prevails.
