Can You Thrive on Feeling Like the Odd One Out?
Being different isn’t that bad.

Do you struggle with guilt when doing things your way instead of granting the wishes of others? Does your family think your way of living is wrong?
I used to feel like the odd one out. Pangs of guilt would slowly eat me alive whenever I went against society’s expectations.
After all, I quit my safe job, moved out of the bustle of the city and dived into a quiet life of books, writing, and meditation.
My family wasn’t thrilled. And yet, despite their scowls and nagging, I wouldn’t give up my quirks. They made me who I am.
Being different is not easy. But I wouldn’t want to live any other way.
Today, I thrive on being different. And you can too.
The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice; it is conformity.
— Rollo May
Being you makes you authentic.
Being you makes you one of a kind.
Being you makes you interesting.
And because you are you, you dare to stand out. Standing out is a marvellous act of self-love.
Going against the expectations of others, especially family, is excruciating. Yet, it is a neon sign of love and compassion you have for yourself.
Self-love is not just a hashtag on social media. It is a building force for success. When you like yourself, you make good decisions.
People will judge you. That’s just what our minds do to keep us safe.
But your focus on whether others approve of you perpetuates your misery.
Instead of fighting it or conforming, you’re better off by accepting the judgmental side of human nature. Respect others’ right to have an opinion, but don’t compromise your values.
Forgive those who think they have a saying in your life and move on with peace. It will do you good. Their criticism and defensive attitude toward the world will stay with them.
Embrace being different as a badge of honour.
Because you dare to live a different life, it makes you bold.
Rejecting a conventional lifestyle will piss people off. But you will discover freedom. Authenticity makes you alive and present. Being true to yourself is the lifeblood of your creative power.
When you become proud of who you are and the fact that you did not succumb to society’s expectations, your self-esteem skyrockets. When you feel confident in your way of living, it makes you attractive.
Being true to yourself is the lifeblood of your creative power.
People-pleasing comes at the price of forsaking your dreams. It feeds your anxiety and destroys your long-term priorities. When you remain true to your values, regardless of the world’s shoulds and shouldn’ts, you soar.
Successful people don’t play by the rules. It is hard to put them in the box. Following the beaten path is boring. Success is anything but boring.
Pluck up the courage to stand out in the mainstream way of thinking.
Your way of living is not better than others. It is different. Just because somebody chooses to climb the corporate ladder doesn’t make them wrong. It is their path to learn crucial life lessons. It is what suits them best at the moment.
Embrace your differences. Hug them with appreciation and love. They make you — you. No one in the world can be a better you than you are.
People-pleasing comes at the price of forsaking your dreams.
Invest in time alone.
The path against the current might get lonely.
People, who oppose your way of living, may turn their backs on your choices. You might run out of topics of conversation. You will find that you no longer connect with people you used to share mutual interests with.
This is perfectly okay.
Not every relationship is here for a lifetime. We learn from each other. We grow and, sometimes, our paths no longer merge in the same direction.
You don’t have to make friends to keep up the pretence.
An unconventional way of living comes with a territory — a space for yourself — some call it solitude.
If you have found yourself in such a predicament, it is your opportunity to learn how to feel comfortable alone. Embracing solitude is the greatest investment in your growth.
When you remain true to your values, the right people will come and stay in your life.
Your differences inspire others.
When you choose your path of joy and authenticity, you become a shining example of a passionate life. This kind of energy is contagious.
At first, people may laugh at your choices. They can condemn your way of thinking. But as long as your lifestyle brings you joy, people who need your guidance will start asking you questions, How did you do it?
Share your story with others. Being vulnerable about your fears and mistakes makes people open up to you. You might find their story fascinating as well. And who knows? Your deeds may inspire them to change their lives.
When you remain consistent with your heart, you attract the tribe that matches your new frequency.
Congratulate yourself for being curious about life. Instead of following the status quo, continue to pave a new way.
Taking the path less travelled is not always shining and filled with unicorns. But it uncovers your greatest potential and makes you resilient to any challenges.
Your bold attitude is empowering to others. You came here to inspire others and dazzle them with your awesomeness.
Go on. Shine your light. The world needs it right now.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
