Britney Spears is Publicly Being Held Hostage by Her Abuser and the US Court System
Her latest loss in court will mean that despite global support through the #FreeBritney Campaign, she’s not going to see freedom any time soon.

In recent months, Britney Spears has been in the headlines regularly.
#FreeBritney is a trending hashtag on all social media platforms.
Fans and celebrities alike are voicing their immense concern for Britney’s wellbeing, and the peculiar situation she is currently in which is causing her to be a prisoner in her own life.
In a tangle of public pressure, mental health struggles, opportunist family members, and millions of dollars worth of capital, the current situation for the 38-year-old Pop Star sensation is a messy and complex one.
Here is a breakdown of the struggle thus far:
What’s the full story?
Many of you will remember Britney Spears’ infamous meltdown of 2008, when she walked into a hair salon and, in front of a trove of paparazzi, shaved all of her hair clean off.

This public mental and emotional breakdown started an important conversation around how the spotlight damages the mental health of celebrities, and caused a chain reaction in Britney’s life that would change everything.
Soon after the Head Shaving incident, it was declared that Britney was not competent enough mentally to make her own decisions, and thus for her safety, conservatorship was given to her father. This meant that any big life decisions, from working to spending to everything in between, would ultimately be decided by her legal guardian/conservator on her behalf — who, in this case, was Spears' father, James Spears.
Fast forward 12 years later to today, and Britney, who is a mother to two teenage boys and recently finished a successful residency in Vegas last year, remains under complete control of her father.

You may have seen #FreeBritney go viral when fans and online users became increasingly concerned by Britney’s extremely odd behaviour on social media.
Under one of Spear’s Tiktok videos, a user in the comments said:
“If you need help, wear yellow in your next video”.
Britney was seen modelling a yellow crop top that she claimed was her favourite in her next social media post.
From this point on, more support for Britney grew viral online as questions were raised about the validity of her conservatorship, and the state of her own safety, autonomy and mental health.

She would then open a case in court to have her conservatorship moved to another person (rather than her father) when the spotlight on her legal situation became a main talking point in the media and among fans.
In what only seemed to confirm what many feared most, Britney began the process to regain some semblance of her freedom in the court system, against her father as her conservator.
Britney Spears just got hit with a big loss — freedom is still not hers.
It was decided by the courts early this week that conservatorship would remain with her father, as it had for the last 12 years, and it could not be temporarily suspended or be allocated to her legal aid.
Let’s just be clear — Britney was not looking to remove all conservatorship from herself. She was just looking to transfer that responsibility to another party who she felt would actually look out for her well-being, rather than exploiting and milking her for financial gain.
Britney remains trapped under the greedy and emotionally abusive control of her father.
It’s heartbreaking to see that despite her desperate pleas, she has not been heard. She has not been listened to. She has not been granted support by the legal system to protect herself, her best interest, or the wealth she herself built. She should have more say over who controls it, if her own entire say is not adequate.
Being able to make her own decisions is a basic human right she is entitled to — it’s been 12 years. It’s been long enough.
She has successfully raised two children. What more does she have to prove to the courts?
And if she cannot yet obtain the freedom she so rightly deserves, why in the hell is she not granted the right to choose someone she actually trusts to be responsible for her big life decisions and fortune?
That, at the least, should be heard. She should at least not be stuck under the thumb of her manipulative and exploitative father.
Her father has an exceptional amount to gain by remaining her conservator — and plenty to lose should he be removed.
It is estimated that Mr. Spears makes $130,000 per year (plus reimbursement of office fees) by acting as Britney Spears’ conservator for her estate alone.
That’s a pretty cushy job for a guy to have — he just has to keep ordering his adult kid around, and force her to work whenever he wants, and he can keep living in the life of luxury.
Were he to lose this gig as his daughter’s conservator, he would suffer a substantial financial loss of income. So, of course, he would want to hold onto that, no matter what.
No bother that his daughter has stated she does not trust his, is afraid of him, and accuses him of only caring about his own financial gain over his daughter’s overall well-being and mental health.
It’s important to note that conservatorship is often only allocated for the duration of a person’s own lacking capacity to take care of themselves — it is absolutely absurd that this has been in place for 12 years now.
All the while, Britney has continued showing up for concerts, a successful Vegas residency, and raising two children. But that doesn’t show her to be responsible enough to make her own life decisions?
She went on hiatus in 2019 from her career, refusing to work in music while her father could continue to exploit her by working her like a slave and keeping the money she rightly earned from her own talent, career and legacy.
Final word.
As has been pointed out by specialists, there are very damaging side effects to long-term conservatorship, with Britney’s 12 years with her father as her legal guardian more than qualifying as “long-term”.
For one, there are significant emotional costs to this arrangement, which is rarely taken into account by the courts when making these decisions for keeping an arrangement like this going.
The biggest pain point is that, due to the nature of a conservatorship, a person under this arrangement does not even have a legal foot to stand on to fight it on their own.
Spears had to get a petition approved by the courts to expand her legal team (increasing legal costs to fight against her father, who controls her money), by the courts. She had to get permission from the courts to be able to adequately defend herself… there was a substantial chance that they could have said no.
Can you imagine not even having enough legal autonomy to hire a defence team to defend yourself against your abuser, because said abuser has full control of your money!?
Those under long-term conservatorship are not allotted the basic human rights to fight the suffocating and controlling arrangement, even long after they have regained competency of themselves.
They remain stuck — held hostage in their own life — because of an extreme legal ruling with no specified expiration date to protect them from exploitation.
Not even a date for re-evaluation has existed in this arrangement — it’s just been placed with an indefinite lifespan. And here we are… 12 years later.
Britney has been completely stripped of her own agency as a human being, resulting in deep psychological damage to her self-worth and independence.
It is truly a violation of her basic human rights, after 12 years of this continual arrangement that can only naturally become abusive when the conservator is gaining financially by their ward being a prisoner of the legal system.
It is shameful and heartbreaking, and has not gone beyond anyone that in this case, there is a woman with a past of mental health difficulties being held hostage and controlled by a man.
We all watched as Kanye West have a public, mental breakdown of mania (involving many concerning incidents) in the months before the US election — and yet, we saw no one flocking to place a conservatorship on Kanye West, as was done immediately with Britney Spears.
Why? Because there is a history in Hollywood and the music business of completely controlling women, stripping them of their autonomy, and benefiting from their hard work for selfish gain.
The court system, and James Spears, are no different. There is much to gain from keeping a successful, popular woman under their thumb and under their control.
And so, history continues to repeat itself, and Britney is still not free.
But that doesn’t mean the fight is over yet.
