POETRY / 30 DAY POETRY CHALLENGE
Breaking Out of My Prison Shell
Prompt Day 11: Defying tradition and conformity
I’ve spent many years trapped inside of a shell, trying to be someone I really was not. Playing pretend, I performed my part well, to the point where my genuine self was forgot.
Conforming to what I’d deemed ‘normal’ and ‘good’, I dared not break out of the bonds I’d created. To be who I really am I never could, ‘til falsehoods and facts started to be conflated.
But as I grow older the less I’m concerned with keeping my brittle facade well-maintained. My need to conform to a fiction absurd is something that I can no longer sustain.
Why should I copy what others would do? It’s only to me that I owe my allegiance. In failing to ever be to myself true, I’ve only done my self disservice egregious.
I’ve got to break out of the shell that’s my prison, although it may make me feel raw and exposed. Don’t want to conform or be bound by tradition. To contrived uniformity I am opposed.
Throughout June, I‘m taking the Know Thyself, Heal Thyself 30 Day Poetry Challenge, with thanks to Diana C. Thanks also to Tree Langdon for inspiring me to take part.
