Blurred Fate
Chapter 13 of A Glimpse of Eternity

Sometimes, just sometimes, we may not be in control of our own lives. As many times as this has been preached by the world’s leading philosophers and gnostics, it rings home to everyone in a slightly different way. Each one of us, I presume, has one section of their lives that they wish they would alter. Those who have lived a life unbound to surprise have been the lucky few. Fate had been on their side. But concurrently, it was not meant to be on mine.
His head was aching; I could sense that from the way in which it vibrated in his palm. He was not detaching it anytime soon. His phone buzzed with irritation as it decided to fall from his grip, landing onto his glass of whiskey and penetrating the ice that had engulfed every drop of the drink.
My slow footsteps approaching him made him inclined to withdraw from his own grasp. He knew I was not forgetting my questions anytime soon.
“It’s gone. The ship’s gone. It failed,” his swollen eyes avoided my gaze as he tipped his glass over to the ground, crashing into hundreds of tiny droplets that once wore the stars giving birth from his gaze.
“Surely they must have mistaken it with another ship. It can’t be ours,” I gulped down a situation that I knew was a fact.
Nevertheless, the mind can learn how to hope.
“I said, it’s gone! Are you deaf? If the structure failed, I failed. I am nothing but a petty failure. Ten years, Sara. A project that took ten years has flown right out the window. I’m a disgrace,” his posture drifted away from me, focusing on anything but the annoying beggar who had just invaded his sanctuary.
“I’ll be back once you’ve calmed down — no one can talk to you like this,” I stepped outside of his office, shutting the door as I made up the decision that would cost me a lifetime of regret.
I leaned against the door in response to wanting to comfort him with the news I had bore inside me all day, before I came to realize I was standing outside a room with a dead man.
