Summary

In "Blurred Fate," Chapter 13 of "A Glimpse of Eternity," Sara grapples with the news of a failed space mission that her late husband had dedicated ten years to, while also dealing with her own existential crisis.

Abstract

"Blurred Fate" delves into the emotional turmoil of Sara, who confronts the crushing news of a space mission's failure, a project that her late husband had poured ten years of his life into. The chapter captures a moment of intense despair as Sara's husband's successor, overwhelmed by the weight of failure, dismisses her attempts at consolation. Through Sara's perspective, the narrative explores themes of fate, control, and the human capacity to hope even in the face of overwhelming loss. This chapter is part of Angelina Der Arakelian's experimental book, which weaves poetry and short stories to tell Sara's story as she navigates life, death, and the spaces in between, ultimately deciding to embark on the abandoned space mission herself.

  • The author suggests that control over our lives is often an illusion, with fate playing a significant role in our destinies.
  • There is an underlying belief that even in moments of great loss, the mind can find ways to hope and persevere.
  • The chapter reflects on the idea that some people are fortunate in life, with fate seemingly on their side, while others, like Sara and her husband, face repeated setbacks.

  • Sara's decision to step away from the conversation with the successor hints at her recognition of the need for space and time to process grief and regret.
  • The mention of Sara's late husband's dedication to the project underscores the theme of legacy and the impact of one's life's work on others.

Sometimes, just sometimes, we may not be in control of our own lives. As many times as this has been preached by the world’s leading philosophers and gnostics, it rings home to everyone in a slightly different way. Each one of us, I presume, has one section of their lives that they wish they would alter. Those who have lived a life unbound to surprise have been the lucky few. Fate had been on their side. But concurrently, it was not meant to be on mine.

His head was aching; I could sense that from the way in which it vibrated in his palm. He was not detaching it anytime soon. His phone buzzed with irritation as it decided to fall from his grip, landing onto his glass of whiskey and penetrating the ice that had engulfed every drop of the drink.

My slow footsteps approaching him made him inclined to withdraw from his own grasp. He knew I was not forgetting my questions anytime soon.

“It’s gone. The ship’s gone. It failed,” his swollen eyes avoided my gaze as he tipped his glass over to the ground, crashing into hundreds of tiny droplets that once wore the stars giving birth from his gaze.

“Surely they must have mistaken it with another ship. It can’t be ours,” I gulped down a situation that I knew was a fact.

Nevertheless, the mind can learn how to hope.

“I said, it’s gone! Are you deaf? If the structure failed, I failed. I am nothing but a petty failure. Ten years, Sara. A project that took ten years has flown right out the window. I’m a disgrace,” his posture drifted away from me, focusing on anything but the annoying beggar who had just invaded his sanctuary.

“I’ll be back once you’ve calmed down — no one can talk to you like this,” I stepped outside of his office, shutting the door as I made up the decision that would cost me a lifetime of regret.

I leaned against the door in response to wanting to comfort him with the news I had bore inside me all day, before I came to realize I was standing outside a room with a dead man.
