Really, really red roses — Photo by Susan Alison

PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Blood Red Roses and Gruntled Workers Day

Also, Carrot-eating Dog, and Cold Stone in the Graveyard

What an absolutely amazing colour these roses are! They are so perfect, they are mesmerising.

Another wonderful carving in the graveyard. She looks so real and lovely, but she has to be depicted in cold stone.

So sad.

She was only twenty-three.

Jack is pleased he can get into ‘his’ garden again — he spends a lot of time out there eating grass, pretending to be vegetarian. He knows it’s good for the planet.

Mind you, it’s not just an act — he loves raw carrot and if I forget to give him his daily ration he makes sure to remind me in no uncertain manner!

This Crocosmia (montbretia) is growing in the surgery’s garden — I love it mainly because it reminds me of when I was a child and lived near the sea — great swathes of it grew down the cliffs, and in a breeze, they all moved in the same way as the waves on the ocean, as if mimicking them.

Paintings of skies by Susan Alison

I’ve been trying to get started on my ‘How to Paint in Watercolour’ publication for a while now and, in the end, this week, I finally did get started.

Part of the reason it took a while was that I knew I had to start with equipment and materials — just exactly the somewhat plodding start to any painting book which I would skip over myself …

Anyway, I took the plunge and have done it now. Next up is much more interesting — how to paint skies (as above) with two colours and one brush.

I won’t keep going on about my California Tree Poppy, (more than I have already, anyway), but I’ve been trying to get a pic to show the scale of it. This one shows how big it is in relation to cars and surrounding houses. It is BIG. It’s at least 12 foot high, and more than that wide.

July 13th was Gruntled Workers Day — yes, it was, honest! Here is a national days calendar.

It’s gruntled because the aim is to see the work we do in a more positive light. And also to spread that positivity by appreciating the work or services of others.

This doggo is definitely happy in his work — he’s a plumber by day, lap-dog by night, and he takes both roles very seriously indeed.

The Photo-A-Day Challenge is fab to do — it makes you look around more than you otherwise might as you go about your daily life.

It is also fascinating to see what other people see as they go about their lives all around the world.

Dennett started it — she’s a star!
