Summary

Greg experiences intense joy in a fleeting moment with Rosemary, which he knows will soon end, as revealed in a dark twist within a 100-word story challenge.

Abstract

In the flash fiction piece titled "Greg’s Dark Side," the protagonist, Greg, is depicted in a moment of extreme happiness as he holds Rosemary, a person he met online two weeks prior. The story captures the essence of kairosclerosis, a term describing the acute awareness and desire to preserve a moment of happiness. Despite the joyous connection, the narrative takes a sinister turn when it's revealed that Greg is holding Rosemary's severed head, indicating a much darker context to his desire to savor the moment. This drabble is part of the "100 Story Challenge" by @Zane Dickens and invites readers to engage with the author's work and explore more of her writing.

Opinions

  • The author effectively uses the concept of kairosclerosis to contrast the joyous moment with the underlying darkness of Greg's actions.
  • The story implies a critique of the transient nature of happiness and the lengths to which one might go to preserve it.
  • The twist at the end introduces a element of horror, subverting the initial impression of a sweet, romantic encounter.
  • The author invites reader interaction by encouraging responses to the drabble and promoting her other works.
  • The inclusion of a personal bio and a call to support the author through a "Buy Me a Coffee" link suggests a self-promotional aspect to the piece, common in online publishing platforms.

Greg’s Dark Side

Greg was happier than anyone has ever been…

This drabble (100-word story) is a response to Crush Hundo Edition’s word prompt. Today’s word is KAIROSCLEROSIS.

KAIROSCLEROSIS: The realization of happiness and blissfulness. You know you are happy and you want to stay in that moment for a while and feel it before it fades away.

Greg had never been this happy. He held Rosemary tight to his chest and stroked her cheek. He knew that eventually he would have to let her go, but he wanted to savor the moment.

They started chatting online two weeks before. But it didn’t take him long to realize that he had to meet her. She was funny and sweet. And she did this thing where she played with her hair when she was nervous.

Greg held her for a few more minutes before he let her severed head go.

It was time to get rid of the evidence.

This 29th drabble is written as part of the “100 Story Challenge” by @Zane Dickens.
