Bitter Asian Dude — A YouTube Channel Not Enough People Are Watching

Banner from BitterAsianDude.com

Most who recognize the Canadian actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee will know him from the television series Kim’s Convenience.

Fans of that lovely show, available to non-Canadians on Netflix, should brace themselves. Remember the first time you realized that guy from House had a British accent in real life? Well, TV Land tricked us again.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s YouTube channel does have plenty of Kim’s Convenience videos for fans of the series, but it also has a lot more.

He’s a self-proclaimed geek who loves Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Star Wars.

In the first video I discovered, the effervescent actor’s attention was split between figuring out how to stream on YouTube while celebrating Ghostbusters Day.

The gifted actor, and grown-up kid, has a surprising depth of knowledge about popular 80’s movies and loves to unbox new toys (from old movies).

A bittersweet video on the channel also reflects on the final episode of Kim’s Convenience. The video begins with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee playing the character that led the sitcom.

In the aftermath of the abrupt end of the Canadian series, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee revealed himself to be a thoughtful and patient man. He is able to reflect on things when they don’t go the way he hoped and draws useful lessons from them.

In the video below, he reminisces about how his career started and the people who helped him. Along the way, he tells the story of how a small stage play became a beloved 65-episode television series.

If you could use a break from mortgage-paying adulthood, go watch Paul open a box. You’ll start to remember why Back to the Future was a perfect movie and he might even share a few life lessons along the way.

Now, if we could just get him to switch from Star Wars to Star Trek.
