Before It Even Aired, Disney Plus Cancelled a Completed Series

The Spiderwick Chronicles was in the works, but the plug has been pulled.

In the past, I’ve chatted about all sorts of cool TV shows. You can find the links to those at the end of this post.

But today, let’s dive into something new: Disney is pulling the plug on The Spiderwick Chronicles, a show they seem to have already wrapped up.

According to a report from Deadline, it looks like Disney+ has decided to hit the brakes on bringing The Spiderwick Chronicles to its platform. They were all set to roll out an eight-episode series, a cool collaboration between Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television.

But hold your horses. Theseries is not going to waste — it’s already done and dusted. Paramount is now on the hunt for a new home for it, hoping to find enthusiastic takers.

But hey, it’s not just Disney+ playing this game. It seems like a bunch of big players in the entertainment biz, think Netflix, Paramount, and Max, are stepping back to rethink their content strategies.

They’re giving the content release playbook a thorough read, trying to cut down on costs and give more spotlight to the profit column.

This whole reevaluation saga kicked off when David Zaslav got his hands on the reins and decided to reshuffle the schedule at Warner Bros. and then HBO Max. Heck, they even axed the Batgirl solo movie, if you can believe it!

Now, let’s talk about The Spiderwick Chronicles. You know, that beloved YA series penned by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black back in 2003?

Well, it was all set to be the star of this adaptation show. The plot revolves around this family that stumbles upon this magical book like a treasure trove of fairy tales and mythical creatures.

This was probably on your radar if you’re into fantasy and whimsical adventures. Oh, and by the way, they did make a movie out of it in 2008, directed by the genius behind Mean Girls, Mark Waters. People loved it, so it’s not like the idea wasn’t promising.

Guess what? The series was actually shot already. They’ve got a cast that includes the likes of Jack Dylan Grazer, Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Joy Bryant, and Mychala Lee.

And here’s a cool tidbit: Christian Slater was all set to rock the role of the season’s big bad guy, the shape-shifting ogre Mulgarath. Now that’s some casting to be excited about.

But even with The Spiderwick Chronicles taking a step back, Disney isn’t giving up the game. They’ve got their sights set on adapting Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson book series.

And here’s the twist — they’re doing it in-house. It’s like a passion project for them. The source material comes from novels that Disney put out through its Hyperion imprint. So, while one door might be closing, another is swinging wide open.

Final Words

In a nutshell, it’s a wild ride out there in the world of streaming and entertainment.

Shows and series are getting shuffled around like a deck of cards, and everyone’s trying to play their best hand.

Keep your eyes peeled because who knows what could be coming next.
