Be Consistent and Soar to The Top

Seven steps to becoming more consistent and therefore more successful.

Author’s Personal Photo

I believe there are several factors in why certain people become more successful and consistency is one of those. Why do some people struggle so much with consistency? I personally struggled to be consistent with tedious tasks that took a lot of concentration, particularly on beautiful days when I preferred to be outside. So, I realized that I had to ask myself the very same questions I pose to my coaching clients beginning with identifying my desired outcome. Most often, I am working on multiple goals at the same time. It is easiest for me to cross of the short-term goals first and then work toward the long-term goals. But, If I do not know what I want to achieve or have a vision, then how do I know how to plan to get there?

Next, I have to understand why I want to accomplish those desired outcomes. Why will it make my life better if I achieve those goals? By publishing articles every other day, interacting with other writers and maintaining consistency I will grow my network, become a better writer, increase my audience, and make more money. In the long term, I will work consistently on my book and eventually publish it. All of the writing I am doing establishes credibility for me being an expert in emotional intelligence.

Then, I write my goals down. I list rewards that match the goal. For example, short-term goals get smaller rewards such as a nice bottle of wine, dinner out, or a special new candle. When I accomplish my long-term goal, I may treat myself to a short vacation or day at the spa. Attaching a reward to the goal makes me more disciplined and holds me personally accountable because now the outcome is fun and rewarding.

Staying in the moment rather than focusing on the end result allows me to enjoy the process. I try not to bite off more than I can chew so I am realistic when setting my goals and I allow for flexibility. That way, when there is a particularly nice day that is calling me to be outside, I am not disappointed if I do not stay on track, I simply know I have to work extra hard the next day.

The Take-Away:

How I become more consistent:

I admit I am still a work in progress, but hey — isn’t that what life is all about?

  1. Identify my desired outcome or ultimate goal.
  2. Write short-term and long-term goals down. Attach rewards to those goals to help stay on task.
  3. Understand why those goals will improve my life. How will my life change for the better? How would my life look if I do not achieve these things?
  4. Have a plan for how to implement those goals allowing for flexibility and building in contingency plans.
  5. Stay present and enjoy the process.
  6. When I am not inspired and the going gets tough, remember my “why” and push through it. I set a timer and make myself plow through to achieve my reward. I like to use crystals and candles to create an atmosphere and mood. I even get up and move my body in intervals or get on my mat when I need a break.
  7. Remember, nothing good comes easy. I have to do the work, but I am worthy, and it is worth it.

I absolutely love writing. I am trying hard to become more consistent, but I am also trying to practice self-acceptance and self-love. Life is a delicate balance and I am also trying to build my brand as an entrepreneurial and there is a lot to juggle so I am trying to realize that and although I do not always meet my goals and deadlines sometimes more important issues come up that open doors that I need to pursue. So, It is very important for me to look at my goals openly and from every perspective and practice awareness of the big picture.

While my writing goals may seem inconsistent, my overall goals of growing my brand and my business are very much consistent. Sometimes I am too hard on myself and it is difficult to see the big picture when I am hyperfocused on the present moment so it is important to take a step back from time to time and look at the overall quality of the work I am doing. Can anyone else relate?
