Answering My Own Prompt
Prompts on ‘All’s Well’ Series showcasing an author and teacher

This week, I wrote to ask you to read some of the stories in our magazine, ‘All’s Well’, and to write a review of one of the stories (not necessarily published in ‘All’s Well’), written by one of the writers hosted on ‘All’s Well’ that you like best. I asked you to submit to our publication.
So far, we have not had any responses to this prompt, but that is okay because this had given me the opportunity to write this one.
The day I wrote that prompt, I saved a particular story by Danya Khelfa. I thought this writer’s story, ‘Finding Peace — A Personal Journey in Committing to the Hijab’ was unusual, and so I went to the writer’s blog page and found another story which I want to write about here as my one-minute story about the same writer. (Usually, if you like one story by a writer you will enjoy another and it is surprising what variety you get from writers on Medium.)
One-Minute Story on Danya Khelfa’s cookery story
‘Helping Students Find Their Recipes for Learning’ is full up with observations about how working with your children to create dishes can enhance and bring out critical thinking skills.
Khelfa has been working in education for 20 years, and is therefore well equipped to make such statements about education.
I particularly enjoyed the focus on time-management as a skill in cookery in this article, and the allusion to problem-solving skills being ‘folded in’. This gave me an image of my own daughter and the night before a cookery lesson. The actual job of finding the ingredients for the lesson was enough to open up her mental faculties, as we worked together to find suitable or alternative ingredients ready for the next day together in the supermarket at 10 p. m. after I had prepared dinner on returning from work to help her out.
As a single mum at the time, I remember feeling a little guilty that this cookery lesson shopping was so rushed. But I do find that the slow unpacking and careful assembling of ingredients can act like a meditation of sorts, and maybe that is why I was so drawn to the cookery story. Do read it. You will find it full up with ideas.
