Why is it like that?

Our world is overwhelmed by data. There is more and more data every year. At the same time data generation speed is increasing faster and faster.

In the research from Statista, it is expected that the amount of data created by 2025 will reach 181 zettabytes (one zettabyte is equal to a trillion gigabytes). Meaning it will nearly triple the amount of data (64.2 zettabytes) that was generated and consumed in 2020. Also, an interesting fact is that approximately 90% of this amount is replicated data and only 10% is new.

What does it mean for the average person?

What does it mean for us?

It means that the average person is already overloaded with information and it will become even worse in the coming years. Also, if there is a lot of information available it becomes more and more difficult to make any decisions as your mind gets overwhelmed with different factors, risks, and opportunities it needs to consider. In the end, quite often, it can decide not to decide at all. It means that you skip solving your problems and leave them as is which is absolutely not good for your life goals and progress.

Do you feel that there is a lot of unnecessary information blowing your mind?

I feel it as well.

Nowadays there are a lot of informational sources and different channels for getting content. We all know them well. There is a lot of unnecessary and low-quality information from all these sources which just overwhelms you. This information flow paralyzes you and leaves you completely drained if not managed properly.

Why analytical skills?

To successfully pass through this “informational jungle” it is crucial to develop analytical skills as they will help you to identify a problem, investigate to find out relevant facts and ways to solve it, and finally create a solution and an action plan.

Analytical skills are important for many different disciplines. However, nowadays with all this data and informational flow, I believe that they are crucial for everyone even in our daily lives.

Developing analytical skills will help you to focus on finding solutions for particular problems, analyze numbers and concrete facts, skip unnecessary information, and create action plans that will lead to your goals.

Some people have a more analytical mindset others don’t. But as with many other skills, they can be developed.

How to develop analytical skills?

I know several proven ways to develop analytical skills which helped me to develop them.

Proven ways to develop analytical skills

· Develop your mathematical skills. Mathematics is a very logical science. It involves solving an equation step-by-step to reach an answer. Practice various forms of math problems that will help build your logic and problem-solving capabilities. Improving your mathematical skills is a great way to sharpen your analytical skills. Also, it will teach you to focus on numbers and to understand them better which is very useful for developing analytical thinking.

· Find several different solutions to one problem. This is a great way to develop your analytical skills. Try to analyze a problem from different angles and find different solutions to it. Then compare these solutions, and understand the pros and cons of each of them. Be fact-based and concrete. In the end select the best one and create an action plan.

· Develop critical thinking. Critical thinking is a very important part of analytical skills. To make effective decisions you need to develop it. Don’t believe all the information you find on the Internet. Think critically, find primary sources, and check facts and numbers. Double-check everything before starting to trust.

Also, you need to understand that the same numbers can be explained absolutely differently and conclusions from them can be opposite.

Have a look at the examples below:

Q3 sales dropped dramatically, showing a 50% decline vs the previous quarter.

Sounds scary, right?

But, look at that:

Q3 sales dropped dramatically, showing a 50% decline vs the previous quarter. At the same time, sales grew vs last year but outstanding +75% and the seasonal drop of sales between the third and second quarters is -60% on average based on five years of statistics.

Now, it looks the opposite when you see some other numbers, right?

That is what I am talking about. Critical thinking is crucial.

· Train your brain. Analyze some information and numbers without a need. Just for training. Ask questions. Find answers, build your own forecasts on how a situation will develop, and then monitor the results. It will also help you to improve your analytical skills.

These were 4 proven ways to develop your analytical skills. Try them if you want to grow the skills that will be very useful to you in today’s world full of data.

My conclusion

We live in a modern world of permanently growing amounts of data. In order not to be lost in this “informational ocean” we need to develop analytical skills. It will help us to separate useful and necessary information from useless stuff, make effective decisions, and solve our problems.

Analytical skills are an essential part of problem-solving skill which is one of the most crucial skills for ourselves and for employers all over the world.

Four proven ways to improve your analytical skills are:

· Develop your mathematical skills

· Find several different solutions to one problem

· Develop critical thinking

· Train your brain

Hope this helps!
