In a consumer driven society the pursuit of ownership is the main focus for many people. Unfortunately, success is often measured based on the amount of material possessions which you have. Such approach leads to focusing on ownership and materialistic things when setting goals and thinking about self-progress. These goals such as sport cars, big houses, private jets etc. are clear and understandable.

· But are they inspiring and motivational?

· Are they good enough to keep you doing what is needed in the long term?

· Is focusing on such goals the best way to achieve outstanding results?

From my point of view in most of the cases the answer to all the above questions is no.

Several years ago, I discovered from my own personal experience that goals which are focused on ownership of some materialistic things work pretty bad for me. Let me tell you why.

Firstly, when I set ambitious materialistic goals for the long term which I was dreaming about I was very motivated in the beginning. But then I discovered that motivation from such goals disappears quite quickly. Because when I was thinking about these things it was really cool to dream about them but not really inspiring to work hard to achieve them. There was no big idea behind my goals that would really challenge me to step out of my comfort zone, push my limits and develop new skills.

Secondly, I discovered that when I was focusing on such goals and they were ambitious enough it was really difficult for me to create more or less clear plan how to achieve them. Let’s take an example. If you want to have a sport car for $300 000 it is obvious that you need at least to have this amount of money or an ability to cover credit payments for it. But this goal doesn’t anyhow highlight to you what you should do. That was a problem for me. I ended up being disappointed with my materialistic goals.

Thirdly, my ambitious materialistic goals began to push me to start spending more money and take credits for buying luxuries which I could not afford. Honestly speaking, I did not do it but I started to think about it as a possible solution to achieve my goals. So, our brain works in interesting way it always looks for the easiest path in the short term and do not really care about the long term. I am happy that I did not go this way.

Thus, I failed with these goals before even started because I did not find motivation and inspiration to create a proper plan and start implementing it.

Later I started to look for different approaches for setting long term goals.

I found a concept which I really like and which works for me. It is the concept of being, doing, having.

From my perspective this concept works in the following way:

People need to think about what they should change in themselves in order to become individuals who do things these people want to do and have items these people want to have.

From my point of view this concept is very helpful for setting goals because you can use it in several different ways.

Firstly, you can set self-development goals if you already know what changes you want to achieve in your personalities.

Secondly, you can think about lifestyle you want to achieve and things you will be doing and then based on it you can easily understand what individual you need to become in order to have such lifestyle.

Thirdly, you can even focus on having materialistic things which you dream about but you need to think about them from the perspective of being an individual who has it. And then you can think of what such people look like and what they are doing to have what they have. In this case you can easily find examples of these people and start investigating how they become individuals they are now. What is even more important is that you can start learning from them.

Thus, I discovered for myself that if I want to achieve some goals, I should start my journey to them from myself. I need to start from changing myself and becoming a better version of who I am. This can be done through doing things that I never did before. Because that is the only way to have what I did not have before.
