How to Achieve Your Goals?
Which approach is better? “Small steps” or “Big moves”?
There are many ways to achieve something in different areas of our lives. And individuals select their own paths to their goals and dreams to make them come true. There are two opposite approaches how to move from point A to point B. One of them is an approach of small consistent steps which bring you closer to your end goal, develop over time and allow you to achieve the goal in the end. The other one is an approach of big moves that significantly change the entire situation in your life and in some ways cutting the possibilities of going back to the past and pushing you to move forward.
Both approaches can be effective but there is a huge difference between them.
Small steps
The approach of “small steps” is very useful because:
· It is easy to start.
· It does not require a lot of resources.
· The price of mistake is low.
· Usually, it requires really small amount of will power and energy to make each step.
· It allows to take calculated risks.
· Achieved results will be long-lasting and sustainable.
· It helps individuals to slowly master new skills and personally develop over time.
However, this approach has some disadvantages as well:
· It will take a lot of time to see significant results using this approach. Most likely years or decades.
· This process can be boring and routine.
· It requires consistency.
· It is not really motivational because of postponed results.
Thus, ‘’small steps” is easy to start and effective approach with minimized risks which will help you to slowly achieve your goals in the long term but will require consistency and necessity to maintain self-motivation. Honestly, speaking this approach can be characterized as “slowly but surely.” The only question is that will you last long enough to see its results.
Big moves
The approach of “big moves” is opposite to the previous one and has the following advantages:
· It creates conditions which will push you to move forward, sometimes at all costs.
· It will give some results immediately.
· This process can be really interesting and inspiring as it makes big changes in your life.
· It creates new opportunities.
· Usually, this approach cuts possibility to go back.
· It can give big results quite fast.
· There is a possibility that you will personally develop much faster and become much stronger if succeeding this way.
In terms of disadvantages, they are as follows:
· It is difficult to decide on making such a big move.
· It can be very stressful and tough.
· The price of mistake is really high.
· It requires a lot of energy and will power.
· Risks are high.
· Its results can be not sustainable.
So, “big moves” is a risky approach of making a big bet on something in order to achieve significant results faster having in mind that the price of mistakes and wrong decisions will be very high but the process will be inspiring and interesting. Perhaps it can be worth trying such approach of achieving goals at least once.
My conclusion
Of course, there is no right or wrong if we compare these approaches because which one to use strongly depends on personality of individuals and their particular situations. Also, there are a lot of stages in between these two opposite approaches. Big moves can be not so big and small steps can be not so small. It depends.
Personally, I experienced both approaches in my life. I had several “big moves” and they changed me and my life a lot. In my opinion sometimes they can be very helpful.
However, usually I prefer to use “small steps” approach in order to achieve my goals. I think that it is a brilliant one for any types of goals: ambitious or realistic.
I like this approach because it is not only about end result it is also about the process of moving to it. And this process requires small regular steps which help me to feel the path to my goals and develop my personality through consistent actions over time. Regular actions are very helpful in developing better version of yourself. Self-development and changing one’s self is the key to achieving anything.
Also, a big plus of this approach for me is that it allows to make mistakes and adjustments during the process without losing a lot. Of course, from time to time it can be a little bit boring but it works well. “Small steps” approach helps to achieve sustainable results of any difficulty in the long term and that is exactly what I am looking for.
And you? What do you prefer “big moves” or “small steps”?
