Interacting with other people’s content on Medium is crucial because it creates a community that is positive, it makes your own work more visible to others, and you’re able to earn more in the long haul.

Engagement is key for growth in various ways.

While Ryan Canady did a superb job of explaining what engagement actually means in his previous story, I’ll share my own insights and experience.

I keep track of the comments I make through my profile by looking at the number of responses I have. This includes all responses made, both on other writers’ content and the replies I make to people’s comments on my own content.

HCC guarantees me spending a bare minimum of 30 seconds on content I interact with. I often spend roughly 5 minutes for each story I come across and even though I would love to optimize this further, I am okay with the process because I know that it takes time.

There are times I only clap without leaving comments or highlights, so don’t take it personally if it looks like I “clap & run”. I always read the content from top to bottom, because I know that the read ratio affects your earnings.

I want to be all over the place, interacting with hundreds of stories each day, but my time is limited. Just like yours.

However, when I have “Medium time”, I make sure to spend as much of it as possible on things that actually make a difference. Either for myself or for others. In one way or another.

I love the “Your Story Has Fans” notifications I receive.

So far, in ~14 days, I have received such notifications on five comments and one story in total. Sitting comfortably on the top of comment sections with claps from 10+ people gives me tremendous exposure over time.
