Waterproof Ducks Waddle in Water Tank
Vidya’s gorgeous narrative reminds me of my visit to historical Sivasagar a few winters back in the northeastern Indian state of Assam.
Sivasagar (Siva means Lord Shiva; sagar here means water tank), around 360 km by road from Guwahati (the principal city of Assam), was the capital of the Ahom kingdom from 1699 to 1788.
An important hub for the tea and oil sectors, Sivasagar is famous for Ahom palaces and monuments. And its Borpukhuri (Bor in the Assamese language means ‘big’ and pukhuri means ‘pond’) tank is so beautiful that your visit to the town remains incomplete if you don’t visit this tank at least once.
An architectural masterpiece with an area of around 50 hectares and 64 feet deep, Borpukhuri was dug by Ahoms in the 18th century.
An abode of many flowering plants, it is an important habitat for migratory birds during the winter.
There I chanced upon meeting these beautiful omnivorous creatures.
They were nine in numbers, whiling away time, seemed in no hurry at all and I was racing against time...huh!
I was close to them, capturing their fascinating movement for the next half an hour — their paying-no-heed-to-me attitude, the breath-taking ripples they were creating on the surface of Borpukhuri paddling underwaters moving in a haphazard pattern, keeping calm.
They were squeaking, grunting, and quacking in some distinctive way (must be criticizing and calling names for disturbing their peace…wink…wink).
I was jealous and baffled, truly!! How could they multi-task so well!!!
The two orange-beaked, green-headed Mallard ducks seemed to be the group leaders, five white Pekin ducks and the rest two gray-colored varieties (unable to name) were following suit.
Ducks’ webbed feet act like paddles when in water. Because of their webbed feet, they waddle instead of walk.
I had to hurry up as my husband had to catch up with an old friend.
I would remember that picturesque locale and the awe-inspiring meet with the raft of ducks for times to come.
The secret of success is to be like a duck, smooth and unruffled on top, but paddling furiously underneath- Bill Cosby
Love and gratitude Mary & the wonderful SWPSC team for such a wonderful space and for the invigorating March prompt ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
