Summary

Anna, a concerned co-worker, reaches out to Miracle, a diligent but struggling employee facing personal and professional crises, offering her support, a place to live, and a renewed sense of hope and survival intention.

Abstract

In a moving narrative of compassion and humanity, Anna intervenes in the life of her co-worker, Miracle, who has been struggling silently with financial hardship, workplace discrimination, and health issues. After noticing Miracle's absence at work, Anna uses her own past experiences to empathize and take action. She visits Miracle's apartment, finding her in a dire state, and offers her a lifeline by proposing they become roommates, thereby alleviating Miracle's immediate financial burden and giving her a support system. This act of kindness not only reflects the impact of empathy and connection but also underscores the importance of giving back and helping others survive their personal challenges.

  • There is a call to action for readers to actively seek out opportunities to provide hope and support to others, thereby perpetuating a cycle of positivity and survival.

All Of Us Have A Survival Intention

I walk a lot, and I see many people here in my country who gave up on life but still live.

Ten knocks later, Anna screamed, “Miracle, I am not leaving until you open this damn door!”

Twenty minutes later, Miracle Downer opened the door to her apartment, tears streaming down her face. Anna grabbed her before her frail malnourished body hit the floor. Slowly pulling her co-worker inside, sniffing at the scent of rotting food and garbage overwhelms her. Glancing around for a clean and safe place, Anna slowly eases Miracle’s lifeless body onto the bed, pushing the dirty clothes to the side.

Then taking her hands, she pulls her towards her as she knelt facing her, then consoles, “you can’t stop living while you are alive.”

In tears, Miracle replied, “How did you know where I live?”

“HR gave me your address.”

“Why? Why did you come? You hardly know me. We never exchanged five words in the five years we have been employed at Simpsons and Sons Industries.”

Holding firmly on her hands, Anna shares, “Did you know that you are the only employee who has never been late in five years. Or absent. You don’t drive. You live one hour away, and you were never late.”

Miracle's eyes widen, tears reeling down. She said, “twelve people called me when no one heard from me in a week. I lied, telling everyone I was ok. You are the thirteenth and only one who came to make sure I was. Why?”

“I was you ten years ago. I saw the same fear in your eyes a week ago. I, too, stopped living when I was alive, and someone gave me a Survival Intention. Someone gave me hope. A reason to live while I am alive.”

Miracle reached over and hugged her, and they both cried.

Then Anna said, easing away gently, still clutching onto her hands, “who or what took away your intention to survive?”

Miracle signed sincerely, glancing around her tiny apartment.

Anna took her hand and led her outside. The park was nearby, and they sat on the first concrete bench.

“My landlord died, and his son wants to double the rent. I must help my family back home, who rely upon me for their support. I can’t afford to pay more rent. Mrs. Grant at work is fighting me because Mr. Simpson said I should be promoted to Supervisor. She wants her friend and lover, Mr. Campbell, to get that position. I have Lupus, and the stress of Life is taking away my will to live.”

“Someone gave me back my intention to live. So I will give you back yours. I need a roommate. My apartment is rent-controlled and within walking distance from work. Like you, my family relies on me too for support.”

Miracle stared at her in awe, gulped down the hope before it choked her in tears, and said, “Really?”

“I have been where you were, and it’s not a good place. The lady who gave me back my intention to live said, ‘When I survive, I will have the power to reciprocate what I got. That multiplied my will to live. Someone gave me a survival intention. I am alive today to return it. That is the most beautiful gift anyone could give.”

In happiness, Miracle said, “You are giving Miracle a miracle.”

Squeezing her hands, Anna smiled, “Even a miracle needs a miracle sometimes. But, you are the miracle roommate I wished for.”

Hugging each other again, Miracle thought out loudly, “you must have a heart of love to tell something was wrong with me.”

Smiling, Anna shared, “My grandmother often said, love, is the light that leads a kind heart to help a generous heart that is in trouble.”

“Thank you for giving me back my life.”

“Come on,” Anna said. “I will help you clean up and pack some stuff. You are not spending another night in that dump!”

I walk a lot, and I see many people here in my country who gave up on life but still live. Whether it’s a stranger, co-worker, family, friend, child, or foe, use your heart light to heal, help and guide them back to living while they are alive.
