Ahmaud Arbery’s Life Mattered
How justice comes for Arbery’s family but his life will never return.

Brunswick, Georgia court system gets it right. Justice is long overdue. Ahmaud Arbery was killed because he was Black and it is so heartbreaking that the color of one’s skin mattered that much as he was jumped by three racists. Travis McMichael, 36, and his father, Greg McMichael, 66, along with their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan spotted Arbery jogging in their neighborhood and took advantage of the situation and stole his life from him and his family.
This father and son duo gets another life term for a hate crime in addition to serving time for murdering Ahmaud Arbery along with their neighbor. These three will never see the break of the day outside their prison cells and justifiably so. They will not be on the streets to do this to another person.
They were truly a menace to society and people of color. To hear life in prison for this father-son duo for committing a federal hate crime restores some faith in the processes of the justice system. More justice comes a calling to their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, 52, who videotaped the murder as though it was entertainment, gets 35 years.
These men chased Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old unarmed Black man, down through a Georgia neighborhood and ended up fatally shooting him. Arbery was jogging solo when they accosted him and as he struggled and fought for his life, he was struck with the fatal shot from the son’s gun.
Believe it or not, the McMichaels requested after they were sentenced to life in prison without parole in state court for Arbery’s murder to be placed in federal prison because they feared for their safety in the state prison system. Even Bryan requested to serve his federal sentence first. Really? Who are they to demand anything after killing an innocent Black man? This is what is called “white privilege.” Thankfully, their requests were denied.
They took Arbery’s life but now they fear for their life. They should have thought about this before taking Arbery’s life. No, but they felt superior in committing such a heinous crime and believed that they would get away with Arbery’s murder. For a moment, it did appear that way as they remained free after killing Arbery enjoying life as usual but karma due to the public’s outcry with massive demonstrations came knocking.
Two years after Arbery’s slaying, justice rests on his grave and brings his family some resolve that his killers are now behind bars. Arbery’s death along with George Floyd and Breonna Taylor’s murder sparked an outcry worldwide against the killings of unarmed Black people.
Now that these three have been sentenced to life in prison, they expressed remorse to Arbery’s family that they are sorry for the loss of their loved one and they never intended to harm Arbery. They ran Arbery down in a pickup truck, tackled, surrounded him, and shot him but they did not intend to do this. The father’s attorney tried to get a lighter sentence stating Greg McMichael had health issues like a stroke and depression and age problems.
Greg McMichael should have thought about his health issues and age problem when he was running Arbery down in his pickup truck. He gave no thought to the value of Arbery’s life but now his life matters. At least he gets to keep his life even if sitting behind bars. Even that’s too good for racist white men who obviously killed Arbery because he was Black.
Travis McMichael and Bryan put two dozen text messages and social media posts where it was clear they were racist as they used racist slurs and made disparaging comments about Black people. One could only hope that their cellmates are Black.
The McMichaels were denied any chance of parole and all three defendants have remained in jail in coastal Glynn County while awaiting sentencing after their federal convictions.
In conclusion, Ahmaud Arbery’s family got justice for the murder of their loved one but nothing can bring him back. The family needs to seek punitive damages by filing lawsuits against Travis McMichael, Greg McMichael, and William Bryan. RIP Ahmaud Arbery, justice finally came to your final resting place.
