About Me — Vadim Dambreville
Embracing the Art of Living Across Cultures

Hi everyone! I’m Vadim Dambreville, a storyteller and explorer of life’s complexities, born on a torrid June day in 1974, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. My life’s been like a vibrant painting, each stroke reflecting my heritage’s rich hues.
Imagine growing up in a house filled with laughter, thanks to my dad, Claude Dambreville. He wasn’t just any artist and author; his imagination was limitless. Our evenings were pure magic. My mom’s infectious giggles would fill our home with pure happiness. It always pulled my brother Tao and me right into the heart of their joyful world.

My dad didn’t just shape my journey in art and creativity. My grandfather, Pétion Savain, renowned as one of the fathers of Haitian painting, also played an important role in my life. My father’s guidance and my grandfather’s artistic legacy sparked and nurtured my deep interests in writing, philosophy, and art.
Thanks to my French, Creole, Spanish, and English fluency, I’ve had the fortune of diving into various cultures. This immersion has been a treasure trove, enriching my storytelling perspectives.
After high school, I migrated to the United States, settling in Miami just in time for Hurricane Andrew in August 1992 — talk about a baptism by fire. I attended Miami-Dade College, and upon graduation, I sought a different direction in life, leading me to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. I spent most of my enlistment at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC, as an organizational automotive maintenance technician. While ‘fixing trucks’ might be the simple description, the experience was anything but basic. It honed my skills in leadership, planning, and the disciplined structure that now regulates every aspect of my life.
This Marine Corps experience profoundly influenced my approach to family life. The leadership skills I developed, especially as a non-commissioned officer, now play a vital role in family events. Whether managing family road trips or organizing gatherings, my family often relies on my Marine Corps-honed skills for planning and execution. This military background has instilled in me and my family a sense of structure, teamwork, and discipline that extends far beyond the rigors of military life.

Post-service, I explored various roles, from call center positions to personal banking, each one teaching me strength of character and resourcefulness.

In 2015, my life took an unexpected turn. I chose to step away from my career in banking to prioritize my mental health. This period became even more significant following the passing of my dad in March 2021, prompting me to engage in profound introspection and prioritize self-care. Despite grappling with the lasting effects of my service, like significant depression, tinnitus, and chronic pain, I’ve found solace in activities like Freemasonry, reading, traveling, cycling, camping, and exploring the occult.

A personal achievement I’m particularly proud of is maintaining my sobriety. Overcoming life’s pressures and staying sober have significantly shaped my tenacity and character.
As I approach the milestone of turning 50, I reflect upon my life with gratitude and comprehension. Writing on Medium allows me to offer glimpses into the moments and encounters that have influenced my journey, starting from my early years in Port au Prince, navigating the responsibilities of being a father and the experiences gained through serving as a veteran.
I have a range of interests which mirror the diversity of our world. I love the moments shared with my daughter, Yesenia, and my mother, Betyna. I enjoy experimenting with recipes in the kitchen and spending quality time with my two boys, my cats, Kiki and Gunny. I also cherish Supporting our veterans’ causes and raising awareness about health issues are among my passions. Additionally, I am always eager to stay updated on technological advancements and be a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.
To me, traveling goes beyond going from one place to another; it’s about exploring the unknown and delving into the ancient knowledge of diverse cultures. Each journey isn’t just about getting on a plane and flying away; it’s about getting to know new ways of living and exploring various realms. Every trip is an opportunity for discovery, a moment to engage with and comprehend the countless narratives and customs that shape our worldwide community.
I’ve wandered through the colorful streets of Ecuador, felt the rhythmic heartbeat of Jamaica, and soaked in the historical richness of Europe. In France, Spain, and Italy, I’ve tasted the essence of each country, savoring their unique cuisines, music, art, and architecture. These travels have been sensory feasts and celebrations of the world’s incredible diversity.
But Cuba holds a unique allure for me. Stepping onto its soil felt like coming home, a connection far deeper than the shared cultural threads I know from Miami. In Cuba, the air doesn’t just touch you; it wraps around you, welcoming you into its embrace. For me, it’s not like a fleeting déjà vu. This bond is stronger; it’s spiritual, tapping into a part of me that even my Haitian Vodou roots don’t reach. This year, I’ve been drawn back to Cuba three times, each visit reinforcing this inexplicable connection.
My trips are more than physical excursions; they are voyages of the spirit. Each destination whispers its stories, and in Cuba, these murmurs resonate like familiar tunes from a past life, urging me to explore its mystical depths further.

Driven by curiosity, I am constantly on a journey to grow and uncover the mysteries of our universe. This exploration has led me to explore wisdom and traditions rooted in African and Eastern philosophies and spiritualities. The rich tapestry of these cultures captivates me deeply, particularly Afro-Cuban religions, such as Ifa and Regla de Ocha, that resonate strongly with my Haitian heritage.
Through my explorations, I seek to broaden my horizons, cultivate empathy, and foster a deeper understanding of the human experience. I believe embracing diverse perspectives and engaging in meaningful dialogue is essential for personal growth and societal progress. As I continue to navigate the labyrinth of life, I remain committed to embracing new experiences, expanding my knowledge, and contributing positively to the world around me.

My writing explores identity, resilience, spirituality, and the human condition, inspired by my personal experiences and intellectual curiosity. Once in a while, I will sprinkle humor into my writing as a reminder for all of us to seek out joy in the little moments that make up our lives. My philosophy and values are shaped by my time in the Marines, Freemasonry, and my interest in philosophy and the occult. I value discipline, integrity, knowledge pursuit, and exploring life’s mysteries.
In the future, my aspirations extend beyond the written word. I am driven to deepen my exploration of spirituality and cultural belief systems, integrating these discoveries into my writing. For me, achieving these goals is not just about personal fulfillment but also about offering a bridge to explore and understand diverse perspectives. It’s a journey towards enriching both my life and those of my readers, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and connection in our increasingly interconnected world.
