AUGUST WRITING PROMPT
About Me — Addendum
Thanks to those Q& A from TBIN!

[1] What’s a new technique or topic you’d like to try writing about?
I have a whole brain-full of foodie-type stories to write but just haven’t got around to it. From my childhood days and my mother’s fabulous baking to food traditions and travel memories. We can learn a lot about a culture, a person — life, just from food.
[2] What are your top three values in life? Why are they your main values?
Interestingly, I had to answer this question a few years ago when I started my Bachelors in Vocational Education. The top three values that guide me and define me have not changed:
- Communication; I firmly believe that good communication skills are essential in both my personal and professional life. Whether it is through the written word or orally, the ability to express oneself openly, honestly and thoughtfully is key to developing relationships and establishing understanding, compassion and accountability. It also includes listening — we often forget to hear what others are saying before formulating an opinion or jumping to conclusions.
- Tolerance; the ability to be diplomatic and kind even if you may not share the same opinion or understand the way others operate. I have the opinion that there is a reason for every behaviour and — again — one should never jump to conclusions or diss another for their choices or actions.
- Competence; the ability to know you can do something at the same time as being aware of the areas where you lack ability. Having the courage to seek advice and acknowledge self weaknesses is an asset. I may have years of experience as a nurse but I don’t know everything and never hesitate to ask for guidance. In the writing world, the same goes — I have made great strides as a newbie but don’t profess to know it all. Far from it. I am a sponge, eager to soak up whatever I can to make me a better person, nurse, teacher, writer. I learn from experience.
[3] If you only had 5-minutes to squeeze in some mental health / self-care time, what would you do?
Take a shower! A nice steamy hot one if it’s a cold miserable day or a cool refreshing one in summer. Either/or, a shower is refreshing, invigorating and rejuvenating. Somehow those jets of water flush away troubles and combined with a nice smelling body wash and some clean clothes or pj’s afterwards…it’s magical!
[4] What is one story, tradition or myth about death that has been passed down to your family?
Death is part of life; we will all die one day. It is inevitable — like taxes! The key is to live each day in appreciation for the gift we have been given, knowing we have no control over whether tomorrow comes — or not.
[5] If you could have a magic wand to zap away one food in life and never have it exist again, what would it be?
I will be shamed by all the veggies out there but I can’t for the life of me understand why tofu exists! It is one reason why I have food stories in mind! It deceivingly looks like a lovely, feta cheese but tastes more like cardboard.
- Favourite podcast app? Ted Talks — so many interesting folks out there educating the world.
- Favourite app on your phone? Stocard; no need to have all those plastic point cards in my wallet — in fact, I don’t even have a wallet anymore.
- Favourite piece of technology? My iPhone — it’s my lifeline; my camera, my calendar, my connection to the outside world on the go.
- Favourite person? I admit to having to do a huge think on this one as I have kids — and didn’t want to choose a fave — and have a lot of friends from many different circles, far and wide. Decided it is 100% a lady that became my friend 26 years ago when I first moved to Montreal and we have never had a tiff, have a lot in common and we still are in regular contact. Patti — you are a gem and I love you to pieces.
- Favourite kitchen item? A spatula! Great for cleaning up the last scraps off a bowl… then licking them — especially if it’s cookie dough :)
