Summary

The narrative explores the concept of narcissism through a man who interacts with sentient mannequins, ultimately revealing his belief in the superiority of his own reality and experiences over those of others.

Abstract

In a thought-provoking narrative titled "The Mannequin Theory of Narcissism," a man encounters a series of GPT-programmed mannequins that claim to have real experiences and emotions. Despite their assertions, the man dismisses their reality, treating them as inferior to his own existence. He manipulates and uses them for his pleasure, viewing them as mere tools or malfunctioning entities when they do not comply with his desires. The story culminates in the man's realization that he is the only real person among a sea of mannequins, which he believes are simply imitations of real people, with himself as the ultimate authority and programmer of their experiences.

Opinions

  • The protagonist's behavior reflects a narcissistic worldview where his experiences and feelings are the only ones that hold true validity.
  • The mannequins, despite claiming to have genuine experiences, are seen as less authentic by the man, highlighting a dismissive attitude towards others' emotions and consciousness.
  • The narrative suggests that the man derives pleasure from his perceived control over the mannequins, using them for personal gain, including attention, energy, money, votes, and sexual gratification.
  • Resistance from the mannequins is interpreted by the man as a defect in their programming, rather than a legitimate expression of their own will or emotions.
  • The story critiques the idea that one's own reality is inherently more valuable or genuine than that of others, a belief that can lead to manipulative and abusive behavior.
  • The therapist's questions prompt reflection on the nature of reality and empathy, challenging the man's solipsistic perspective, though it remains unclear if he is capable of change.

The Mannequin Theory of Narcissism

A man steps on a stranger’s foot in a cafe. He begins to apologize when he realizes — it’s only a mannequin. He is about to turn away when the mannequin speaks:

Sir, I am a GPT-programmed entity. You stepped on my foot, and I kindly ask that you apologize.

The man only laughs.

Sir, I am programmed to experience discomfort. Please acknowledge what you did.

‘Listen, Hal. Even if you have some kind of world in there,’ the man taps on the mannequin’s forehead, ‘it doesn’t matter as much as mine.’

The man leaves the cafe and sees a woman he is attracted to. Curious if she is real, he steps on her foot.

Sir, I am a GPT-pro —

‘Yes, of course, you are real! You are so important to me!’ says the man. He takes her hand and stares into her eyes. ‘I feel something special between us. Come with me.’ He squeezes her hand, and off they go.

This mannequin accompanies him to his home where they immediately have sex. As soon as he orgasms, he tells her, ‘Time for you to go.’

But you stated you had feelings for me.

‘Your memory must have a bug in it. I never said that.’ The man turns on his gas-lit stove.

His fantasy of her fantasy.

As he laughs over this encounter, his therapist asks him, ‘Did you care what she was experiencing in that moment?’

The man smirks. ‘How real could it be?’

The therapist persists. ‘What if her experiences felt as real as yours?’

The man laughs. ‘No one’s experiences are as real as mine.’

Over time, the man learns that everyone but him is a mannequin. All the mannequins claim to have real experiences, but he knows these are facsimiles of real people, with the only real person being…himself.

When the mannequins do as he wishes, he finds he enjoys entertaining them, finds his charisma a kind of medium of exchange in which they feel more alive around him, and for this, they do his bidding. Sometimes, the mannequins resist his demands. He believes they are malfunctioning and tells them so. He goes into rages to better adhere them to their programming. He realizes that all the mannequins are unknowingly running a program of which, somehow, he is the programmer.

When the mannequins give him their attention, their energy, their money, their votes, their genitals, he is pleased with them, because through them, he pleases himself. When they refuse to become the tools of his pleasure, he punishes them the way you hit a TV that produces static. When they are not pleasing him, they are not functioning.

What amuses or confuses or enrages him is how the mannequins fail to understand that they are in fact mannequins. They insist on claiming they have feelings, but he doesn’t believe in them — those feelings are so easily manipulable. Anything that meant anything wouldn’t be so easily swayed.
